Once DSM-V is published, Asperger's will be finished, dead. I attend asperger support groups and I discuss asperger's with lots of individuals like teachers I meet.
Movies like Asperger's Adam and Mozart and the Whale, Asperger subculture, Heather Kuzniak, all relegated to the dustbin.

Heather Kuzniak does not have OZ-burgers she has autism.

All the books, youtube videos, documentaries, essays, self-help, "all cats have asperger's" will be outdated. David Jordan's video on
youtube "asperger's is like social dyslexia" will be outdated.

In 2013 I have to explain to everyone I'm autistic but not like severely impaired. Asperger's will no longer have any meaning anymore.

If it wasn't for Asperger's I would have never been diagnosed -- no professional ever considered me "autistic"

Ooh, good point. But I think most of the Aspergers media will remain, people will just have to understand that the term "Asperger's Syndrome" is now refering to "High Functioning Autism."

You are neglecting to see that the new criteria will make it EASIER for people to obtain a diagnosis because of the severity categories and the one single label making it look like an actual spectrum, what it should be.

Asperger's doesn't exist. It's all just autism, all the same.

Didn't Bipolar used to be known as Manic Depression? ADD is now Inattentive ADHD but people still use ADD.

We also need to change the stereotype that autism is a person that is severely impaired. What about those with HFA? What's the difference? There is very little difference.
Asperger's is not who you are it's what you have. The only reason people don't like the change is because they don't want to be known as autistic. Well tough, you're autistic.

I'm not sure why everyone is so worked up about the DSM-V. I mean, every time I ever told anyone I had AS, I'd get a blank stare, which was only removed by letting them know that it was basically a higher functioning form of autism.

Which is what it is, and what it's going to be called.

To make it easier to be diagnosed.
Because there is very little difference between HFA and AS.
And I also think so it isn't overdiagnosed.

That's as much as my brain can explain at this hour.

If someone dares to lay their hands on my Elling-trilogy, I will behead them with a Masamune.

Elling is not aspie, he has anxiety problems but his other things don't match. Characters in Erlend Loe's books are, though Erlend Loe himself doesn't know (read Naive. Super!). And Elling is a tretralogy: Utsikt til paradiset (1993); Fugledansen (1995); Brødre i blodet (1996); Elsk meg i morgen (1999). I think some of those books are translated in English. Only three of the books were made into movies though.

I can understand why they want to get rid of the "Asperger" diagnosis; the differences between ASD are too small to be scientifically diagnosable. I do believe we will still be able to call ourselves aspergers, aspies. I hope so, at least.

DSM-V is coming out in May 2013, therefore the title must be revised.
You also misspelt Heather Kuzmich.

Looks like the end of an era, a short one at that. AS was only made official in 1994 it hasn't even been around for 20 years yet.
After all the work Hans did in the 30s/40s it's only fair to have the condition named after him. I know AS is basically autism anyway but two different scientists were studying two things seperately, Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger. They did their own independent studies they weren't working as a team.

I've grown attached to the term. It sort of sets you apart from the rest, and I like that. Maybe they'll rethink changing it by then. :/

You can't be too sure, he may have AS+having severe mental problems, but let's take my projects on AS then, no one will dare to delete them, they're mine and my parents will murder the people who dares to interfere with me.

I suspect it will continue in use long after it is no longer official. It will still describe a "type" of person when used outside the medical/psychological terminology although it could, over the years, fall into disuse. It's too useful a "you know what I mean" name to disappear. If words like "paranoid" and "psychotic" can become part of the regular popular vocabulary, "asperger" will still have a place and still be used; imprecisely and sometimes inaccurately, but as a shortcut word that is understood.

I liked how Orwell put it in this post: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp2620215.html#2620215

Basically it will still be used, like the term "Kanners" is still used, it just won't be an official diagnosis label.
