Who else here has trouble with inertia, as in "the strength to get up and do what needs to be done?" (apologies to Garrison Keillor!) I've got a list o'things that I absolutley need to get done, I've had weeks (in some cases months) to do them, but I just can't quite get them done, regardless of the amount of planning I do. Anyone else here do this? It's been a theme throughout my life. It no longer applies to stuff like classwork or shopping, though. But to bigger things like taxes, etc. How do you deal, folks?

I sit back and let it work itself out. If it becomes absolutely necessary, I'll then get up and do it.

All my Aspie young adults are like this, I do hope they grow out of it, one always leaves the house late and usually gets to where his going late. Claire usually procrastinates with college work but gets to where she wants to be on time. And her boyfriend sleeps a lot so the time he could be doing things is wasted, so he procrastinates to. They all sleep in late when they can, which means that Ben and Adam sleep a lot. Is this an Aspie thing, procrastination? they always have really good reasons why things didn't get done, and always put it off for another day. Yet when they do work they work really hard. I can understand the sleeping to some extent, Stress with college and looking for work, never knowing what the future holds etc. But it does get annoying.

It seems to take me a time to get stuff done, especially as I'm not currently working and have all day to get things done.

Deadlines get me going though, I can tell you that, and it's helped me to keep a diary of everything I want to get done.

I only do stuff if it is absolutely necessary at the moment. If I do something at the moment it takes me all day as I have all day to do it. If I was actually working or being educated, I think I would have a greater sense of urgency about me and anything I do.

This is a human problem. I don't know anyone that doesn't do it, except maybe my mum.

I've had this problem for like...8 years. I'm 19.

Heck, I'm going to have to graduate high school a year later because of it.

I forget what motivation in school feels like.

Sometimes I procrastinate, but it's not like I don't feel as if I have to do that certain work (in this case school work), it's just that often, after school, I feel absolutely exhausted from running practice and I take a nap for a couple hours, and then everything in the house is too loud for me to study, and then sometimes I stay up way late into the night to try and get things done. Sleep is a bigger procrastination issue than my school work, however, and it's normal for me to get about 5 hours of sleep each night for a week, when I'm really supposed to get at least 8. I'm almost obsessive about getting my work done; it's like the "get the work done or bust" mentality. I do catch up on the weekends, however, and the weekends are a blessing to me because I finally have a couple nights where almost everytime I can stay up as late as I want, and rise as late as I want.

I was a terrible procrastinator when I was young. As an adult I've gotten much better at *starting* things, but still have a hard time finishing them. The closer I get to finishing a task, the slower it seems to go.

When I do finish something, it's probably because I'm afraid of the consequences of failure. For example, in January of last year I gathered together the information for my 2004 taxes and filled out all of the forms except one. Then it went into a "to do" basket and sat there for a whole year. I only got around to finishing the last form and mailing it in because the tax department sent me a warning letter. The stupid thing was that the government owed me money and I knew it. Even the prospect of getting a cheque in the mail wasn't enough to make me sit down and finish it off until I absolutely had to.

[sigh]
