For those using it towards a degree/career great. But I was thinking for the rest of us what does it serve. Ya I love spewing movie facts and researching the latest movie (my one obsession for awhile was Avatar). I sent a post to someone mentioning there interest and he sent me a harsh reply back. I meant nothing wrong by my view it's just truthfully are interests probably aren't going to land us many if any friends and more than likely we ramble about X topic so much toss out a relationship aswell. It's awesome for those with friends or a relationship. but a thought occurred to me IMO perhaps are interests are too narrow. (I know that's a normal thing for us but still) I research stuff online but to what purpose? I'm not in a school learning professionally. To add enjoyment for a couple minutes? What are your thoughts? BTW the person I upset I meant nothing by it. :-) I'm sorry if I upset you. :-)

I have three special interests right now, writing/drawing, the 20's, and The White Stripes. I've listed them from most to least useful.

I would say the my White Stripes obsession can be limiting because I could spend the time I spend listening/reading about them on other things or other music. If that's the case I try and take a 'break' from them for a few hours and listen to something else.
I've seen my mum's face when my also-autistic brother talks about his special interests(Sports, but a lot more focused then most sports freaks), and so I don't talk about the white stripes a whole lot.

Personally, if there are people around who'd make a big deal about (within reason) someone researching the same thing online or whatever, I don't want to be their friend anyways. They'd just nag me, and I'm tired of friendships like that. What's the point of a lot of friends if they ditch you the moment they realize how close your special interest is to your soul? Quantity vs. quality.

Thanks for your nice thought out response. I found the person who PMed me to be harsh and as stated I meant nothing by my post at all. :-) Just telling it like it is. I agree with the friends thing though good point. :-)

I found the PM that you sent me to be harsh, as well. If you don't like my posts, you don't have to read them. Why don't you pick on someone your own level of functioning? I know that you're talking about me. I'm slow, but I'm not ret*d. Let's just forget about last night.

lets see..... my interests from most to least useful

Computers (i went to my voc/tech school instead of normal Highschool so i could get my certifications because of it. but ive yet to find someone who will hire me, and its been around 4 years since I graduated.)

Writing (currently working on a book/series that may oir may not get finished and if it does get finished, I have no clue about how to find a damn publisher)

Playing Guitar (still not good enough to front a band or anything, but maybe perhaps rythm guitar)

Drawing (awesome at mecha, mediocre at people, not even sure how I can use my skills)

Music ( yeah, metal and j-pop fanatic. Maybe I could be a reviewer? too bad I dont care for whats shown on VH1/CMT/MTV at all. Im not closed minded with music, I just have more refined tastes)

Anime (the interest aside from gaming least likely to get me anywhere)

Video games (same as anime, least likely to get me anywhere)

Awesome!

I once described the stripes to a friend of mine who had never heard them thusly: "It's kinda like falling down and scraping your knee on the sidewalk, then a few days later you get a big gnarly scab... except when you pick it, it doesn't bleed, instead raw crunchy rock comes out."

Figured you'd appreciate that. :D

Uh... I've been obsessed with physics since I was like 6... so that kinda unsettles people, I looooooooove cars, always pointing out the first time I see a particular model, especially new and interesting ones, my girlfriend can identify all sorts of cars at random now. She once shocked herself and a co-worker by walking outside and saying "Hey look, a Supra!" "A what?" "Uh... I dunno, but that's one.", pretty funny.

Been into math lately, BIG time... poor girl, she appreciates math, and gave me a new appreciation for it as well... but I kinda bombard her on occasion, though I told her to ALWAYS be aware that she can and should tell me when I'm overloading her.

It lets her pause and digest things better, and it lets me know when I'm rambling too much.

So far it hasn't gotten me a career or anything, perhaps if I'm correct about my suspicions regarding a means to produce a unified axiomatic form of physics it will pay off... that's gotta be Nobel material at least.

My interests in The Kinks and The 60s are limiting, but I'm happier than I have been, for years. The last time that I was this happy, was back in 1996 - early 1997, the ending of my original time as a die-hard Kinks fan, before that Austin Powers movie and that one shot of trying Pot messed with my mind. I'd rather be limited than be fake. I'm in my happy place again. Please don't hurt me, anymore. :(

Mick

Please don't use my posts to further whatever drama or argument you yourself might have started. Cockneyrebel, please don't assume I'm high functioning, for the record my autism spectrum diagnoses didn't come with a functioning label.

I described them similar once, only with chips instead: They're like the crunchy ones that only come from name brand chips. None of the grocery-store brand bullsh*t.

Oh boy. I've really opened a can of worms. I apologize. I wouldn't normally mention things about function levels, here. I was trying to get back at the OP, and obviously it backfired. That's what happens when I treat people the way that other people treat people, in the usual way. Darn, I've gone cross-eyed. I've posted some things that were out of character for a large softy like myself, and I apologize. There's a reason that I chose my favourite Kink for a role model. That's the reason why. I really do apologize to everybody. I can't be like everybody else and treat people in a neutral way, and not feel guilty. I feel better when I'm sweet and I don't hurt anybody.

Eh, as an often times proud as*hole, I'd say the worst arguments I've seen on WP so far barely rates a "meanie-doo-doo-head"... that was closer to a simple misunderstanding, wasn't it?

Also: I dig the Raconteur's as well, you?

Oh it's perfectly all right I was just making things clear. :D You didn't hurt me at all.

Yes, but for some reason all of their singles are my least favourite songs. I like 'blue veins' the best.

I'm using my interests and Asperger's in general to get rich.
