Do you feel that if you add a special interest your main or only special interest will diminish if not totally go away. Or if you start to have more of a social life or have anything really outside your special interest will it go away or diminish.

Never felt that - never happened.

I have layers like tree rings - primary focus from 1975 and from Fall of 2009 now hidden behind Prime Interest of February 2010.

But they are all there, and sometimes one untouched for decades will come to the top of the pile.

Currently my interests involve many different movies. It's true that since my attention is divided between them, I don't feel especially obsessed with any one in particular.

I think so - if I get a new interest, the existing one(s) do tend to get overlooked. In some way I seem to have a very simple mind, and I only seem able to really get into one thing at a time. Most of the things I do require some acquisition of skill, and I'm often horrified at how rusty I can become if I leave off an interest for a little while. It comes back if I make an effort, but that can take some doing. I have to write detailed notes to myself so I won't be confused if I come back to a task after a few days of ignoring it.

I've heard it said that special interests tend to dininish if social performance improves, and I can believe it. Whenever I got a new girlfriend, my other interests would seem to vanish instantly, until things soured and I'd run out of ideas for making things right again, then the special interests would return. I'm a progress junkie.

I have one dominant interest with some satellite ones that orbit around it. Sometimes one of the satellites will take up more time or headspace, but my dominant interest rules and always returns.

The only change that I've noticed is the time available to indulge my special interests as I have become more adept socially. However, they are no less "there."

No, but sewing was ruined for me when I started a small clothing line. Having to churn out the same few pieces over and over again made it a boring job. 3 years later and my fabric still sits untouched.
