I saw the movie Shutter Island today, and I think the main character, Teddy Daniels, showed some signs of Asperger's syndrome. He exhibited a lack of social cohesion and understanding typical of the autistic syndrome: While interrogating patients and staff, he sometimes became abruptly belligerent; he did not realize his actions were inappropriate for the context. He perseverated on his special interests: the Nazi connection with the mental institution. He was smart and otherwise capable. In the movie, we see he is considered delusional, but in this day and age, he may have gotten a more appropriate diagnosis before he committed his "criminally insane" act and lived a happy, fulfilling life.

I've seen some stuff on the tv about this movie and it had me say "I want to see this one" (definitely not a movie watcher). Now I'm even more curious.

Yeah, the movie was pretty good, but it's not really horror or action the way the trailers made it out to be. It's a little more cerebral actually, and it mostly explores the contents of the main character's delusions through his point of view in the context of post-World War II psychiatry.

I see what you're saying. I think that mainly has to do with the fact that the negative symptoms of schizophrenia overlap symptoms of AS. The symptoms are classified under 2 groups, positive and negative. Positive symptoms include delusions and hallucinations. Negative symptoms affect cognitive, social, and emotional abilities.

The guy was considered delusional but not schizophrenic.
