I have aspergers. Is it quite common to have obssesional thoughts or obssess over things if you have the disorder?

Its crazy its like you obssess over one thing for about 5 years then move onto to another obssesion.

Is thier a reason why our brains obssess over certain things? Thanks.

Its tedious isn't it really? I think the nerves that control thought and behavious in an AS brain don't work how they would in an NT brain.

:? A reason? Well, its the atypical way the brain gets hardwired, that's why its called a disorder. I think its connected to our tendency to focus on details and parts of things, rather than just sit back and 'take in the big picture', which to me means 'being superficial and not really paying attention'. How can a person ever hope to truly know something if they don't understand its components?

I don't think there's been any specific section of the brain that has been identified as the culprit, there seem to be several that vary from person to person. If you're asking if there's a means of controlling or stopping it, uhm, no. That would be in the nature of a 'cure' or a 'treatment' and there isn't one.

Personally, I rather enjoy my obsessions. They kind of define me. My entire personality is sort of a pastiche of multiple obsessions. :P

My obssesion is resident evil.

It depends what kind of things you obssess about as well. The negative thoughts and obssesions are not so nice to deal with :(

I use power tools in some of my work. I am constantly troubled by the thought of putting my tongue on the moving blade (table saw, reciprocating saw, various rotary cutters, etc). I do not want to do it, and the thoughts associated with doing it are really horrific (ever seen a tongue bleed?), but I am afraid that I might do it. I have had thoughts like this all my life, but never actually had an incident or accident with a power tool - I do some days have to not use them when the thoughts are very strong. I have similar thoughts of jumping off almost every time I am near a high edge, to the point of acrophobia.

i also have this since i was little

form tropical fishes
to exotic pets

from books (having the same topics)
to movies

from pens
to action figures

i literally have thousands for each category
(not at the same time though)

they are both assets and liabilities to me :) :(
in some way they help me conversate with others
the down part is each obsession would suddenly pop-out my mind
and put me into trance like state :(

how to control it?

i learned this in the primary school...

the power of self-talk

though i still need to write my thoughts back then to keep me on foot
then to say it out
and finally to mentally picture my way out of that obsession

lots of practice is needed

Anyone else sometimes develop a persistent an obsession with a certain person, usually someone you know fairly well, like a friend? They just stay stuck in your head even though you're not the slightest bit interested in them romantically. It's annoying...

I get this. I have similar bizarre thoughts. I'm getting a little better at controlling them now that I know they are a symptom of OCD. Try imaginary target practice. Imagine the obsessive thought or thoughts as those little ducks that scoot by at a shooting gallery. Shoot the bastards!

I also tend to obsess over physical symptoms until a minor concern escalates into an anxiety attack.

However, the good news is, I love my creative obsessions. They enrich my life to the point of near bliss when I am absorbed in them. I guess you just have to take the demons along with the angels and be careful not to let the negative overpower the positive.

Your brain is designed to perseverate. Feed it something positive (indulge in your special interests) or it will eat garbage and drive you crazy.

Yes, it is indeed quite irritating.

There are meds that help but there are always drawbacks. They can make you less obsessive but you may not be able to obsess about the things you WANT to obsess about and you could lose some of your natural ability to focus.

They can be very useful if your obsessions are really taking over your life but if you think you can function without them you should try to. Taking them will inevitably dumb you down (a little). You could also try supplements, B vitamins are supposed to help curb anxiety.

I have new obsessions every few months, usually films, video games and types of music. Sometimes more technical subjects.
