I was in Las Vegas (see pedantic ramblings in haven)

and I reallly really struggled and managed to hold things together, but on the second day, in the evening, at the fancy Flamingo casino buffet, I had a couple of bites of lemon meringue pie and other than the fact that it made my (still recovering...also see haven) teeth hurt....it plummeted me into full-blown meltdown mode....luckily I didn't yell, but I did start crying and acting up and had to leave the restruaunt and wander around with my fingers in my ears....and after the pie....the sensory overload really really kicked in...and it seemed as though everything was completely stabbing at me in horrible ways....and my head was really really hurting and I kept having to put my fingers in my ears...and I basically totally lost it....

Anyone else experience weird food triggers...it could have been something else...and the stress certainly had been building all day.....but the pie seemed like the straw that broke the camel's back.....

Look into a gluten free diet, also avoid MSG(in most processed food, fast food, cheap restaraunts such as Chili's, applebee's and aspartame(in diet sodas and sugar free gum, splenda ect.)

There's a huge awarenes of gluten free happening in central texas, especially Austin. You should jump on the boat = )

Gluten is in wheat, rye, barley and oats.

Going gluten free made my brain fog, low energy, depression and anger go away.

I always feel angry after eating gluten and MSG foods.

The only thing that would make me meltdown from eating would be if I was around people. You said you were under a lot of stress? I think that stress + people + weird food textures = meltdown. Just a theory.

I can't enjoy my food around other people because I'm paranoid they're looking at me thinking I'm greedy. I just want to eat lots of tasty food. I can't be arsed with the dinner-table banter. Good food, a few drinks, some pills, and maybe sex if anyone is desperate enough but that's it.

Eating food with a strong flavor can be an intense experience for me. Although it never lasts for more than a second or two, food, especially salty food, can induce an explosive surge of taste sensation. If the feeling catches me off-guard, I will actually have to suppress a suggestive-sounding involuntary noise. A reaction of that caliber is usually reserved for the very first bite of my food.

It's a confusing event for any stranger who sees my whole body tense up after taking a bite of food, as that suggests a strong negative reaction. Also, keeping a straight face after a sip of sour wine is almost impossible for me.

For all its downsides, it's not that bad. I can really appreciate a good black olive.

I get the same experience from strong flavor, or it can just be a bit of flavor that feels really strong for me. Tomato sauce is a really strong flavor and it's one of my favorites. I had a bit of a mustard obsession when I was younger for the same reason. And the new Vegemite, the Cheesybite makes me ill from just spreading a tiny bit on a cracker.
I can't drink Ginger wine without diluting it with beer. It's so sour. I remember when I was a kid and sour candy was all the rage that I had to rinse them under water because the sour in the candy would literally burn my mouth.

I haven't had a response like this to food but I did have these couple of times in school - once in high school and other in college where the teacher just did something that was the last straw and before I knew it I screamed. Just one infuriated scream. In both cases the teacher completely ignored me. Sometimes you can't take whatever the stimulus is anymore and something's got to give. Leaving and walking around was a good idea in your situation, I think. Las Vegas sounds like overload even for an NT, not one of my destination spots.

I have to take a sip of wine when I take the Eucharist at Mass, and I can't help wincing if the wine they use that day is sour. Sour wine is terrible!
