I'm going to go to one! I have a referral being processed...kind of nervous about it, I think I might spend my first few sessions sitting alone in a corner or something...though I guess the other people will have Asperger's/ASD and will hopefully understand? :/ I don't know...I'm panicking a little...kind of hoping someone will say they've been to one and it was good and I'll be fine. But reading that makes me seem needy.

Anyway...if anyone here is from Coventry in England, maybe I'll be seeing you at Vibes soon.

I'm a member of my local NAS Social group, I was like you and quite nervous about it at first, but now I look forward to the month turning because I'm that bit closer to our next group outing!

Don't worry about being a bit shy for the first visit, that's perfectly natural, once you get to know the other people in your group, and they get to know you, then it'll be much more fun....

It's pretty-intriguining meeting other people on the spectrum for the first time, I love the guys in my group, every-one of us is totally different, some are non-verbal, some like me who don't shut-up, but it's a lot of fun being with people who you can relate to, who you don't have to act to be around, and you know aren't judging you, and all in a public setting (but we've got 3 NAS staff with us so that helps a lot, they take care of all the people-stuff like bookings, paying etc)

I go to an AS social group once a month. It's good to go somewhere where people aren't judging me and we don't have to try to be "normal" around eachother.

The first time I went there I was very nervous but that's something I suspect everyone will experience. For the first few times I didn't really talk much but once I got to know some people there & started talking more it was good. Everyone's very nice and very different. At my group there are some people who talk non-stop and others who hardly speak at all. The facilitators are there to make sure everyone is ok, to organize events and family members are allowed to come along to support someone in the group if they want to.

I'm not sure what your group will be like but I'm sure that it wont be terrible. Just try it, if you don't like it then you don't have to go again but it might be good to meet other people on the spectrum. When I did, it was like I was no longer an alien.

I go to three autism groups a month. I am going to one on Tuesday which is a new group someone started. I have been attending them for a year now. The first time I went I was so nervous I stimmed like crazy. The second time there I was more normal.

I started attending one in my local area just before Christmas. At the moment, there are only four of us. This suits me because I find it difficult to participate in large groups.
