I was reading another thread today on a different site and they were talking about the plague that is emo. I was wondering about this kids because I seem to have a lot at my school. Is it just a fad for attention or something else?

Why must people put a stereotype to everything? Why do people care what other people are listening to or what they wear?

I wasn't trying to stereotype anything. It's a fad I've seen a lot lately. I was curious as to why people follow it. Which is why I asked the question.

Emo kids are those guys whose air does that "flippy thing" and wear girls' pants and usually have scarves in the colder months. Hair is almost always dyed black. Male emo kids look like chicks sometimes...and vice versa!

It has been hypothesized that Emo Kids are just Preps that tried to be Goth but failed.

I thought emo was a type of music, like ColdPlay.

I'm wondering if maybe some of these emo kids really do have emotional and social problems, sorta like having aspergers. However I've seen a lot and most of them just seem to be following the herd. I guess it's one of the "in" things with some kids.

Emo-it's what keeps deviantarts' complaint forum in business.

Back in my day (boy do I feel old), it was called "grunge", except the uniform was flannel, raggedy clothes and unkept hair, kind of like Emo, version 2.0.

Wait, what is a prep, grunge, or emo? I've heard of punks, rockers, skaters, gangstas, emos (though I dunno what this is), etc. but never heard of a prep or a grunge.

I'm still suspicious of the emu subculture.

I prefer Grunge. It's more natural. Just get out of bed and go.

In my son's case, its just trying to fit in. This, of course, is the NT son. My little PDD-NOSer couldn't care less what other people think. In any case, my son informed me he wasn't considered an emo because he hasn't yet dyed his hair black.

Prep = Preppy...dressed up and ready for Yale or the Golf course.

Grunge = I like Bland's description. Get out of bed and go.

Emo = Groth lite works...dress in black, longer hair especially in the front.

Emo kids arent a new fad, they are a new name to an old persistent quality of the development of a person. And high school is the catylst. Before hand the kids were just a pain in the ass, but seeing so many other people around them living the exact same struggle they are makes them think that it is like a problem with society instead of a personal problem.
