I am a 16 year old quiet well behaved boy. However as of lately my special interest has rapidly gone into organised crime groups, specifically the eastern european mafiyas and bratvas. I need help cutting back on this as it isnt a suitable subject however I find it very fascinating but my parents would be angry if they found out. I am not a gangster andd do not wish to be. If anything im the complete opposite, quiet well behaved etc but i have a peculiar interest in organised crime and i think it is unsuitable.

Just let it wear off. I had worse obsessions than yours at about 15/16, and they went away in time. You're not gonna actually DO that stuff, so don't feel too bad about it.

Take care.

What can I say... I understand you. But can't understand why playing computer games with brutal scenes usually is less scary to parents. Some day you might get bored with gangs and become interested in butterflies. Don't worry :)

I was obsessed with communist Russia, when I was 11.

Why is that a bad obsession? I love that movie Eastern Promises! I sometimes have a deep interest in the Chernobyl zone, Russian films and film cameras, the Soviet mystique.

Lots of NTs seem to be obsessed with the mafia as well. Why are movies and TV shows such as the Godfather and the Sopranos so popular? I think my father is aspie and this seems to be one of his special intrests as well.

As long as you have no intention of getting into organized crime then I don't see why this would be a problem. Just don't let it take over your life.

As long as you don't plan on becoming a criminal I don't see the problem really. Hell you could even go into criminology and make a career out of it.

It's not exactly inappropriate... you could become a historian that specializes in that. Just to say it, my family actually has some ties to a mafia. So as long as you aren't in the mob, and you don't go asking people who would know, I don't see a real issue. Do your parents have some kind of issue with it, specifically? It's an interesting historical thing. Would they have the same issue with you being interested in the American Civil War, or the Holocaust? Those were controversial events. And when you get right down to it, Autism is controversial now!

You could have obsessions that are much worse, don't worry about it.

I agree about your possibly becoming a historian on the subject. But if you're really uncomfortable you could look for another interest that is a tangent from this topic. Usually organized crime appears when there are certain political or economic circumstances - you could go in a direction like that.

I've been obsessed with Soviet Russia too. I also really love gangster films. I've probably seen almost every mob/gangster/mafia related film from 1930 to late 90's, even the really lame ones. I also had an obsession with sexual content; movies, internet sites, stories, etc.
I agree with what everyone has said. Just let it wear off. If you find it interesting don't cut back from it. It's not like you're going to join a gang or whatever. My mafia obsession got my parents worried, but they were just being drama queens. I actually watched so much violence that I became desensitized to it. Now I'm back at flinching at a cut finger.

I didn't think it was bad, personally, but my parents did.

When I think bad obsessions I think Saddam Hussein. Most people of the era would recall the Hussein brothers forming their own Beatles cover band named, "Hello Ouday, Goodbye Qusay."

^ Was a Letterman joke, that was an obsession of mine, stayed up until 11:30 to watch it every night and it was during their slump, which occurs very often, the "Will it Float" years. It wasn't even that funny, I just wanted to see what they were doing.

I agree with everyone, it wears off then something shiny comes along and you get obsessed with that.

Don't worry about it, and like everyone said, unless you actually WANT to be in a mafia, their really is no problem with being obsessed with it. Just let it wear off.
