Do you guys have any methods of detecting it or any rants?

Stab them with a fork then they say 'hey, I was just joking.'

Not that I'd do that.

I dunno, but I like him! Sarcasm is one of my "escape routes". If I'm ever not sure about what response a person wants when they tell me something personal, I say something with a mild sarcastic inflection, and they hear it as sincere if they wanted me to agree, and they hear it as sarcasm if they wanted me to disagree.

Plus, it's just awesome.

Who was The Jerk?

Easy: Steve Martin

Who invented sarcasm?

I'm pretty sure experts agree that it was officially documented as Ringo Starr in the movie Caveman.

I'm ok with sarcasm that's easy to detect. My boss uses alot of sarcasm, but most of it I don't get so after a while he asks me why I get so defensive. :(

I don't mean to, I'm just answering his question!

There's this one joke I don't get that he keeps telling me too that I do not understand, maybe someone here can help translate?

If there are two flies in the kitchen, which one is the cowboy?

The one on the range.

   it is easy to make me laugh. thank you for that joke. i needed it.
"the range" is a double-meaning, denoting both a cookstove and the wide open spaces "out west." the cowboy on the range/cookstove. FUNNY! there is humor in the unexpected incongruity of those two meanings. that is the essense of humor. ok i will stop emulating "data" now :)
it reminds me of a callahan cartoon, featuring a fly at a range [cookstove] cooking itself a big steaming pot of "cream of $#!+."

i can tell it's sarcasm directed towards me if my feelings are hurt  but just the same, i often fall down when it comes to expressing myself, IOW i have been accused of being sarcastic when nothing such was intended. i am often self-deprecating [better i insult myself and beat some other @$$hole to it] and folk misconstrue this for sarcasm directed at others.

ok, that flies on the range was a pun/joke. Not sarcasm. However I know what you mean.
I sent a one line pun around today at work, vis;

• A thief broke into the local police station and stole all the lavatory equipment. A spokesperson was quoted as saying, "We have absolutely nothing to go on."

three people thought it was hilarious (c'mon! it was a Thursday after noon at work, it was a break in the grind) and laughed.

and one just went on and on about why would anyone want used bathroom facilities? Sounded disgusting to her.

But neither of the flies on the range or the lavatory equipment was sarcasm, just turns of phrases that have more than one meaning. When people don't 'get it' is how it equates with not 'getting' sarcasm.
