Hi, it is coming up to nine months since I first asked my GP to refer me for Aspergers. I'm in the UK. He did say he would refer me but sent me a letter saying his referral wasn't good enough as the Maudsley hospital in London wanted it to come from a pdoc. He wrote to my pdoc and it has all ground to a halt. No one tells me anything. When I last saw my CPN in May she said she would chase it up but nothing. I am now discharged from that service so asked another GP at the same practice if there was any movement on this. She didn't know any more then me and said these things take time. That I fully appreciate, I know it is not an emergency all I would like is just to know what is going on.

Has anyone else any experiences like this in the UK and what could I do next?

Thanks

beetzart,
google for the local PALS [patient advice liason service] and make a complaint about the ridiculous fcukaround the GP and PCT [primary care trust] are doing, please do this because it will be a big help for every patient of theirs.

the national autistic society have a support line which can be contacted via phone or email, and they can advise on how to go about sorting the assessment out- https://www.autism.org.uk/enquiry

the maudsley is one of the best places for getting assessed in the UK so its also one of the busiest, add to that the NHS appointment times in general can suck,it can take over half a year for some people to get a pyschologist appointment if it isnt looked at as a acute issue.

the private route is one way to go if have got the money, and if are interested in this, contact the NAS helpline asking for a list of all private ASD specialists in/around the area are living in,the NAS have lists of NHS and private ASD specialists in each area, not all of them will assess adults though.
its really difficult getting anything on the NHS but dont give up.

For what it is worth.

I was referred by my GP via the NHS back at the start of march, and my appointment is at the end of this coming week. It took 2 weeks for the surgery to process the referral and post the letter. If you want a fast diagnoses out appears the NHS isn't what you need. However I'm sure there are far worse places in the world to be dealing with this.

I've waited nearly 6 months so far and hopefully just a few days away from getting a bit more information about it (and am very stressed as a result :) ).

I'm new to this and the system so can't off any advice. Other than hoping you get there soon. Good luck!

6-9 months is actually not that long a wait, even our recently established local service has a 6 month waiting list, the Maudsley waiting list is likely to be longer. Things have improved considerably though, when my son was diagnosed he had a series of referrals and the whole process took approximately 3 years through CAMHS and in those days there were only about 3 or 4 adult services in the country.

The worrying point about this is that you have not been told what is happening and that needs following up.
