I have AS and a few physical disabilities. I am going into Residential Care, which is a fancy name for Nursing Home. The thing is I have a huge choice of them. So my question is: location? I have been a city dweller most of my life. I like to sit at a beach. I am finding the city noises, especially traffic to be annoying. I am more than a bit of a hermit. I have choices of inner city, suburban, semi-rural, and rural homes. My first choice of application is an inner city location because I'm already familiar with the area and the building. It is really quite the most convenient place for me to be and I hope that I get accepted there. But I have to apply for at least 5 and think that early acceptance will depend on me putting in lots of applications. There is no point in me chosing location by my friends and family since no one visits me. My friends are on the net, so I only need to make sure that I have internet access in the area. I have been adviced to choose a place I am familiar with but can get transport to the local AS services. Keeping in mind that I am nearly the age for Aged services, what is your opinion?

For the services you will need, I would think ahead and choose a facility that will be accessible to a lot of things. I'd go for places located in a city.

Good luck.

Although my years are getting up there, my only direct exposure to the places comes from my mother [a few stints], my father [currently in place], my mother's aunt, and briefly my sister.

On that basis, though, I would say, do not worry too much about location. The issue is feel. Visit, see what the place is like. The place my mother was is hellish, a nightmare. My dad's is really pretty pleasant. And in their case, his location is a whole lot better as well.

But you need to feel comfortable.

I wish you the best of luck, in finding a place that you like. :)

I'm a Paramedic by trade; trust me especially if you have health problems. Talk to the staff and see if you like them, but more importantly make sure they are professional and not dead heads.

A home like that is often self-contained - Mom's was. There was absolutely no need to go anywhere for anything. I think that might be a point to bear in mind? If the place you're looking at is self-contained - and has in-house nurse & doctor - and ambulance service - well then, maybe you can choose for how the place feels. Mom's was on a lakeshore. The staff was professional, 24/7, helpful and encouraged individual personalities in the patients/clients.

Also - we have a designation, here in Quebec Canada, of CHSLD. I don't know what it stands for but it means that it has been inspected by the Quebec Gov't, it passed the very high standards, it passes frequent inspections, and it accepts a percentage of patients whose only income is Quebec Pension Plan.

Maybe check out if there's some kind of designation where you are.
