A couple of people just showed up pounding on my door - I wouldn't have answered it, but I thought they might have been from the Office of the Apartment Complex. Some skanky looking barfly of a woman who looked like she'd just fallen out the door of a strip club and a large, burly young man whose job is apparently to intimidate. They came here to serve papers on some ten year old debt that rightly is an ex's responsibility, but that's irrelevant.

These two characters began to interrogate me the instant I opened the door and when I was unable to answer their barrage of hostile questioning - literally unable to answer - began to yell and threaten and this continued for nearly fifteen minutes. Both were extremely loud, rude and ugly in the most unprofessional manner possible, but they literally made me feel as though they were going to drag me from my home and beat me right there in the parking lot. I don't care what kind of people they are used to dealing with, there was absolutely no call for their hostility. I don't care what their job is, I'm not a criminal to be verbally assaulted and treated like garbage for their expedience.

I am so tired of this endless bullying. I can't even hide in my own home without thugs coming to my door to abuse me. God, I am so tired of living in this world as a punching bag for anyone with a frustration to take out. When it comes to your door and accosts you in your home under the sanction of local government, there's no hope of ever escaping it.

No advice required, just venting. There is no solution to this.

Well, one.

Who can blame you a Neurotypical person will draw references on how to behave, think and respond to other from their memories(sensory experiences) while this is the opposite for an Autistic individual who draws references from their intelligence.I actually prefer the last way.

What they did was just thoroughly unprofessional. I wonder if this kind of thing is normal for bill collectors?

I would have just let my dog tear them apart. Something doesn't seem right with this scenario. Is what they are doing even legal?

For what its worth, I've really enjoyed reading your posts over the past eight months, gained some really important insights from your words, and had a few laughing-out-loud chuckles from your posts. I know the world is full of a-holes, and sometimes they just come knocking at your door. But I hope you don't leave, please hang in there.

How rude!

(To semi-change the subject, I think the statute of limitations on a debt is 7 years. So even if you were responsible, they couldn't collect on it as long as you don't make any promises to pay, which would restart the clock.)

Probably hired thugs to shake you down by whatever company the debt is to. Are you sure your ex didn't hire them to try to get money from you? She would know about the debt, after all.

When are people good to you? When they have your money.

When are people not good to you? When you owe them money.

Can you at least put two and two together and arrive at a sum of the value of the entire human species?

Technically, they aren't bill collectors - they're process servers, the paperwork they were shoving on me is from some collections agency who's suing me (I think) on behalf of an auto finance company over a vehicle that an ex wife stopped making payments on and allowed to be repo'd back in '98. At least, that's the only thing i can figure it could be - I filed bankruptcy over a decade ago on all the other debt she racked up in my name.

No, the disgusting thing is - these people work for the County Court System. They wear no uniforms, hell, this nasty sl*t was wearing next to nothing, except nicotine stained skin and a sh*tty attitude. She kept trying to threaten me for not answering fast enough, with calling a uniformed officer. I wish she had, somebody needed to witness her outrageous behavior. But no, this was no bill collector - this was somebody paid by taxpayer money to deliver paperwork. I don't see how that justifies verbal assault on the disabled. And whether or not she was aware of my personal disability, this apartment complex is devoted primarily to disabled people and anyone who lives in this area knows that.

Yeah, that's what I would think, but i don't know what else it could be. Doesn't matter, all I have is my monthly disability and that's barely enough to survive on. I don't own any property worth selling, so whoever is suing me, the joke's on them - they're going to spend hundreds to thousands in attorneys fees and court costs to sue someone who has nothing they can take.

I'm just tired of being treated this way. I can't even make a living because of just this sort of ugliness. A petty little bully screamed at me the same way a year ago and is now being allowed to prevent me from being able to make a living, because the State government decided it's okay for him to treat a disabled person that way and they don't see any reason to bother doing anything about it. After all, the Autistic guy's not going to do anything, he's worthless and weak. Go ahead, kick him again. Funny, huh? :lmao:

If they are making you show up in court, then do it. Once you are in front of a judge and able to share some solid facts, the problem should be solved. And the joke really will be on them as they sit paying an attorney to handle it all for them.

You should read the papers, or were you able to keep them from being legally served?

Sorry to hear you are having such problems. I enjoy reading you.

If I can't speak when I'm being bullied and interrogated, I don't see how sitting in a witness box is going to be any different. It's an attorney's job to humiliate a witness for the opposition.

I have them, but they mean nothing to me. I don't recognize the name of the company that's suing me, and it doesn't tell me what for. If I could afford to pay an attorney to just call them and tell them they're suing someone who's only income is SSDI because of a neurological disorder, they'd probably realize they're wasting their time. But nobody does anything for free, and the agencies whose names include words like DISABILITY RIGHTS and ANTIDISCRIMINATION do nothing at all. Well, I assume somebody in those offices draws a paycheck, but apparently that's just for acting as a figurehead, nobody actually defends the rights of the disabled.

I've encountered some pretty abusive ones over the phone, but none have ever come to my door.

That may have something to do with the part of the country I live in though. With the number of home invasions, etc..,we have around here, nobody in their right mind opens their door to strangers regardless of who they claim to be. Likewise...people like this would be fools to actually go to anyone's doors around here considering the number of frightened and armed people behind them.

In many safer parts of the country...door-to-door salespeople and religious prostilitizers are much more common and maybe bill collectors like these ones are as well. The door-to-door folks are literally an endangered species around here.

Not as far as I know. And if it is legal...it shouldn't be.

Find out if there's legal aid in your area. Most times there's no fee at all for disabled people. That's how I got one of my divorces.

I've learned quite a bit about intimidation tactics like this. After a maybe 5 mins of that I would have shut the door on them. If they refused to leave, I would call the cops. If they were actually violent, I would possibly draw a weapon, if one were available.
