So I'm wondering if anyone who has ever worked at Goodwill can help me out.

I've heard that Goodwill can help people with disabilities get jobs (whether at their stores or elsewhere) and I checked their site and they do list autism as a disability, but I need to know if I would need an official diagnosis or not (none of the sites mention this at all).

I would feel really, really stupid if I said "Uhhh...ummm...I think I might have Aspergers." and they turned me down...so I just keep chickening out =/

My wife just told me Goodwill used to, back when she had worked there. But that had been quite a long time ago.

If they do and they're anything like the jobs OVR usually sends people to, you might wish to try your hand at subsistence farming first.

Just a thought

Yeah but do I need an official diagnosis?

I do not have one.

I bet you do. Why not call and ask them, though? I am sure someone there can at least give you the number for their head office or whatever they have like that.

I would guess so as well. OVR will not even consider providing any services (such as job placement assistance or anything else) to those without an official Dx.

While Goodwill is a non-profit and non-governmental organization, I can't imagine their policies would be that much different in this regard.

Yeah, when any organization is raising money for a specific group or groups they would logically make sure the funds or godds/services are being properly used. Otherwise an Joe off the street could come in and take advantage.

Here is a good argument for getting an official diagnosis. It was why I wanted one myself. You never know when you will need that.

This is precisely the argument I tried to make a few weeks ago in another thread.

But some people seem to be resistant to an official Dx no matter what.

Sure I could understand this if receiving an official Dx would entail a significant burden (financially or otherwise) on a person.

But if not....i'd say a the person is just cutting their own throat and they may not even realize that until years later when they happen to need services of one kind or another.

I'm in Ohio & they still do that here, & probably still do in most places. But you will probably need a diagnosis. If they have no proof of a disability, they can not help you because their aim is to help those that are disabled.

Hmm, I was hoping someone would know for sure...

But I guess I'll just go back to the drawing board for now.

What happens in my state is anyone interested in applying for a job contracted through the Department of Rehabilitation goes through Goodwill, which has an office where you can go and apply. First, I went to the Department of Rehabilitation and took all their tests, including a shortened MMPI. After mulling over the results, they asked me what I needed from them. They offered to refer me to a couple of job opportunities and I told them maybe, so they gave me the address of a Goodwill Employment agency which handles their contracts with different employers. You might be able to do this in your state. You could find a pretty good job that way.
