Many of your artists have mental and emotional problems...why do you think Van Gogh ended up cutting off his right ear?

Who knows. From the little I've seen portrayed of him he definitely had his hangups. I generally dislike abstract art. Tend to really like Impressionist though.

I thought that his art was just paint splashs, it is tempting to say that his art was 'monkey art' but there is a big but

I have access to a lot of paint in my basement and at work so I could start splashing paint around, I could become the "Jack the splasher" of the wrong planet but my splashing would not be an original idea. I think that the clever part of his art was not the splashing, but when he thought up the idea of the splashing.

I don't really appreciate this type of art either- the erratic nature is just too much for my nerves.

Punkycat I like your art much better too! And I am a professional artist so I do have SOME credibility here. But to each his own. I am more drawn to realistic pieces, even surrealistic and fantasy art. I love good graphic design and well thought abstract pieces too. I once created a set of small paintings for a friend that were concentric circles and dots of muted earthy tones and rich terracotta. Not genius, but attractive and designed. It went very well in her dining room. Sometimes color and shape, properly designed, is just right.

I had paintings in Kindergarten that looked very much like Pollack's pieces.

I think it is quite possible he may have been on the spectrum - but we will never really know!
I also think there is a lot of validity to Abstract Expressionism in terms of its limit pushing, its zen like quality (not unlike Japanese Zen art and calligraphy actually) and the fact that it is immersed in the sensory realm in a manner that is quite "autistic." And then of course, Pollock "fused with his process" in a manner that is not unlike us diagnosed ASD people who "fuse with" our special interests.

The rote IS the meaning. Pollock understood this.
His work in fact summed that up.

As for comments that his work is no good?

This may be wrong, but my art history instructor in college maintained Polluck was schizophrenic.

I know that many artists had some sort of eccentric streak, but whether they were Aspies I don't know.

The pont of art is not just to look pretty or pleasing but to evoke thoughts and emotions. Pollock accomplished this whether you like his work or not.

I think the point of art is just the sensory experience of it. Like the point of culinary art is the experience of the food; or the point of music is the experience of the music.

Ever seen a baby thoroughly explore a new object? It's kind of like that. Only you probably shouldn't try to put a Jackson Pollock painting in your mouth. :)

I agree with Millie. I think that in the movie Pollock he said the reason of his art was relieving people from anxiety or something like that. I appreciate his art quite a lot!
