Is it common among some AS people to take or make phony phone calls in order to appear important or to fit in? I know a couple of people who I suspect have AS and they seem to have this habit.
If you are one of the people who do this, why do you do it?

I can think of two instances where I will fake a phone call:

1. I frequently do this when about to be accosted on the street by either a Greenpeace/Save the Whatever organization (evidenced by their clipboards and "I'm overly-medicated" sunny dispositions) or by a street bum (panhandling is legal here in Portland, OR). I just flip open the clamshell and start yelling "BUY, BUY NOW damnit!! !!" or similar.
2. I very very very rarely have done this if there was a girl nearby who I thought (due to style, items carried, or a phone call) spoke one of the foreign languages I do. I might fake a phone call to show off that I speak their language too and then possibly lead to a conversation. I also sometimes do this to shut up a group of people who are making disparaging remarks in their native tongue thinking that no caucasian is likely to understand them. SuRpRiSe!

Okay, so that was three instances. I reserve the right to come up with a third one in the middle of the second one. So there. :P

I can't imagine taking or making a call to "feel important" but I am reminded of one of my favourite scense from Casino (with Robert DeNiro).

He had to meet with someone he wanted to keep the meeting very brief. He called his secretary and asked her to "call me in 4 minutes" before the person was sent in. De Niro's character stated his position, deflected argument and "ring ring" answered the secretary's phone call and ended the meeting.

I have used this myself to extract myself out of situations where I wanted to avoid hurt feelings or confrontation. Works pretty well.

I have never made or taken a phony call to "feel important"

I would say highly unlikely, since it's a form of deception and that kind of lying requires a mental dexterity and speed and fluidity of processing that we simply do not have. In order for me to do something like that, I'd have to rehearse it for hours to make sure it would come off smoothly, then I'd have a panic attack at the last minute and abort the whole idea. Not to mention that it just seems like stupid theatrics to me in the first place.

Of course I don't have enough respect for human beings in general to give a healthy sh*t whether or not they consider me important and I have no desire to fit in with them, because I think most of them are shallow twits. The only reason I can see for faking a phone call in front of one or more of them would be as others have already noted - to get the hell away from them.

I made my fair share of prank calls as a preteen.

No....but I did hope that with the advent of cell phones people would at least leave me alone while I was actually talking on one.

I've actually had strangers try to engage me in casual conversation WHILE THEY COULD PLAINLY SEE I WAS ON THE PHONE.

It would be one thing if these people were asking for directions or something...that I don't mind.

But i've literally had people approach me and start talking to me about some totally moronic thing like the weather WHILE I was on the phone. These people were not drunk, they were not blind....they are just inexplicable idiots who probably just do this s**t to deliberately annoy others. I was in a perfectly semi-private location at the time and I wasn't within earshot of anyone who might be annoyed by my cell phone conversation.

I never really liked making phone calls. The only reason I'd fake one would be to get away from someone I didn't like.

I took a phoney call, a long time ago, when I was in college. A girl who was in my college programme that I didn't care for, showed up at the door, quite often, and I took a fake call, from my friend, Chrissy.
