This is not a new thing for me. I always liked music. I used to sing alot when I was a child, but then I think I realized that whistling is an easier and less tiring way. In time I developed it like an instrument, so I have been whistling like crazy for a long time. But its no casual freestyle whistling, I virtually play the piece by whistling in a loud volume. Also I whistle while listening to a piece, and its so fun and refreshing for me. Its some kind of headbanging for me. I whistle mostly while listening to classical pieces, and I noticed that I do it more with rhytmic and fast pieces such as this.

I must say that it comes totally naturally and I wonder if its related with aspergers. I havent seen any NT with this habit and I wonder if some of you do this too?

Just an FYI... Not all people with autism do that. ^^

Most people with autism do stim in some way though. Maybe whistling is one of your stims. I don't think the act of whistling itself is related in any way to autism.

Hmm are you offended by that? If so I was just referring to what heavy metal fans do while listening to metal music.

My (NT) brother does that and it makes me want to punch him. To me, there are few things more annoying than hearing somebody whistle along to music I'm trying to listen to. So I hope you're alone when you do this.

Sorry, I misunderstood you. I hadn't even thought of head banging in that way (rocking out to music). I thought you were talking about literally banging your head against something. It's a self injurious behavior that some people with autism do. There are allot of people that don't understand autism being a spectrum that think all autistics people are severely impaired and "sit in a corner and bang their head all day." I don't even like saying that, but it was the impression when I read your post.

i like to whistle along also. it beats my singing. my voice sounds like a weird combo of leonard nimoy and bill gates with laryngitis, so my whistling sounds better than that. i don't dare whistle in public.

Yea, I ve heard about it. I have a tendency to contract my muscles or move my fingers rhytmicly when Im not busy doing something. I think this is a similar behavior. It is more meaningful when accompanied by music though :)

One main criterion for GOOd music is - good to whistle to. An exception is the Messiah, most of which will NOT compute for me for whistled counterpoint.

Also whistle a capella. Butr whistling either way is very private, for solitude or REAL intimates - it reveals to much of my innards.

my wife rather likes my whistling - but the under the breath semiwhistle - whispere whistle, whatever - that I do a lot thinking it inaudible - that perturbs her and some others.
