A non-AS related post, about Asperger as a name.

It is, of course, of German origin, and comes from the town of Asperg, very near Stuttgart. In turn, the town's name seems to have something to do with the aspen tree.

Obviously prevalent in the German speaking countries (Hans Asperger was Austrian of course), I also found on a Google search the actress Cynthia Asperger, who I think is Croatian.

In the USA, the surname appears to be concentrated in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. When Googling, I found some law firms around the USA called Asperger too. They are so named because they have partners called Asperger, but I bet they are approached a lot by people with AS>

Wow, I did not know this. Thanks for the information.

I wonder how many individuals with the Asperger surname actually have Asperger's Syndrome. Also, I wonder how many people are surprised when they google their surname and find a site like WrongPlanet. 8O

Please keep us up to date on your surname research as you find out more! 8)

I think this is interesting and related enough to warrant moving it to the general forum.

Yep, I grew up on the Indiana/Illinois border and knew tons of people with the surname Asperger when I was young, now that I think about it.

That's nothing. I live in Ohio, and my congressman is Steven LaTourette. I voted for him too.

Also, I found out from Frenchfemme that the word asperger means to sprinkle in French.

If Hans Asperger had AS then Asperger is a surname where more people than average, being related to Hans, must have AS.
