Is it common for people on the autism spectrum to either talk very little or talk a lot?

I talk very little to people I don't know and/or in groups of people/social occasions. But with people I know well and like, I will talk excessively, as if the thoughts are pouring out through my mouth.

I also have times when I go non-verbal, or near non-verbal for days.

Is this part of my autism?

I'm like that as well. Either I talk a excessively or I barely speak at all (oh just got a déjà vu!). I'm at either extreme. I'm like that with most things in life to be honest. Either I'm talking a lot or I'm really quiet, I'm obsessed with something or completely uninterested, I'm on or off etc.

I go non-verbal/mute in certain social situations. I'm not sure if this is all because of AS since I'm not sure I've got it, but that's how it is for me anyway.

It is very Aspie-ish. And I do it also.

I do it too. There are times when you can't shut me up and times when I barely speak a word. Most of the times, I am quiet in situations where I am the outsider or dealing with depression. I like to observe people in a new situation to try and figure them out first before engaging in much conversation. Get me into a conversation about a subject in which I am well-versed though and it is hard to keep me quiet.

Same. After the verbal diarrhea, I'm too exhausted to put anymore effort into socializing and will go a couple of days in anti-social mode.

Usually I'm quiet, or absolutely quiet - but when I get any of my favorites topics (like biology, games or history), I can talk for hours

As a child, I would talk a lot to people I knew.

Now, however, I say very little.

I once heard "Half of all autistic people won't talk, and the other half won't shut up". So yeah, I'd say it's a common ASD problem.

I tend to talk very little (even among my friends) unless the subject is one of my interests.

I am pretty much on the not shutting up side. >< I really wish I could put a lid on it better. But when I talk I TALK. >< causes me so much grief.

When I'm in a large group of people, I don't talk. I just get drunk :?

If I'm with my friends or family I talk excessively, usually rambling and often making stupid jokes which make them think I'm weird. Oh, well!

Yep, there are times where I have nothing to say, and other times where I can absolutely dominate a conversation. I tend toward being quiet most of the time, though, whereas my aspie-ish nephew is more talkative. He's currently obsessed with Minecraft, and will go on and on about it, regardless of whether you're listening.

I'm mostly non-talking, but once I really get started with actually expressing my self without restraint I'll probably remain unrestrained for a while.

Before I lost it I talked very little.
