Have you ever disclosed your AS to an employer? How did that go?

An employer might be happy to get an aspie because of equal opertunity hiring practices. Some companies actively recruit the disabled. I know the two bosses I had loved me, I never was late, I kept my work area in constant disorder but it was very clean, I always did more than I was paid to do without being told to do it, and I always did my best to put out perfect products.

My boss, her boss, and most if not all o fmy fellow employees know that I have autism, and it makes it much easier for me. I sometimes don't respond when people talk to me (I have a hard time with verbal speech), and they needed to know that I wasn't just being a jerk. I also come off very brusquely, I've been told, because it's so much work to get the words out at all that I don't sugarcoat things. I have a lot of trouble socially, of course, and I get myself in trouble all the time. So far, they're just happy that I do my work and do it well, and they basically accept me for what I am.

I didn't tell my bosses about it until like a year & a half after I started my job.

Granted...I didn't know much about it 'til then either.

However, by that point, I was their top guy anyway. Who's gonna kill the golden goose just because he says he's high functioning Autistic? That'd be stupid beyond almost anything.

When I worked at a resteraunt I did four different jobs on my shift and was a busy body. The manager let me get away with my outbursts and oddity because of that. I was a real bastard, I had seniority over the other employees so I would hold my vactions time so I could take it when someone I did not like wanted to go on vaction so I could screw them out of their plans. People missed weddings, family gatherings, and fun times with their families because of how they treated me. Some people learned the hard way to leave me alone.

I told my boss and it was a very health thing for me to do. He is also supporting me 100% of the way on this. So when I get tested here in july just the fact that my boss is behind me feels good. If you are going to tell you're boss just be up front and honest. Don't hide or try to tell things half way.
