I was waiting in line in some store checkout line. There was a lady behind me talking away to me and I did not catch on to her talking to me until the cashier pointed behind me. The woman I guess knows my mother or something like that. Have any of you done this before? It was strange to me that I did not notice this and she was right behind me. I wonder how many times I have ignored someone without noticing it? 8O

You didn't ignore her, you just didn't notice it. :) Something like that could happen to me as well. (and has happened)

Happens to me fairly often. I usually just laugh and apologize quickly. It happens to most people every now and then, so most folks are pretty understanding about it.

That happens with me frequently. One example was when my mom and my aunt came to attend my college graduation ceremony. I was in my cap and gown and the three of us were going up the elevator to the auditorium. Another woman was in the elevator with us standing behind me and was evidently asking me about my major and degree. My mother had to say, "Steve, the lady behind you is speaking to you." She was just inches behind my head, but I missed it because I was fascinated with the elevator buttons (lights, patterns, AND numbers! That's just too irresistible).

Obviously she has some social difficulties if she continued to do all that talking without first getting a confirmation of some type that you had acknowledged her.

WHOA! That's me totally! You say you're DIAGNOSED, and I have yet to be. The similarities, here and elsewhere, are striking!

my SO is an aspie and this is regularly how our conversations go, on a pretty much daily basis:

Me: blah blah blah blah blah
Me: blah blah
Me: blah blah blah blah
Me: HELLO!
Him: What?
Me: I was having a conversation with you!
Him: Oh. What were you saying?

this has been my life for the past 11 years. i end up talking to myself a lot, at least i know *I* am listening.

incidentally, this is also one reason it took us so long to get our son diagnosed. things like this that we didnt realize were autistic traits were attributed to familial tendencies he got from his dad.

it has also affected our kids a lot, they have to call his name 3, 4, 5 or more times sometimes to get his attention. it gets very frustrating for them to think he isnt listening to them, and frustrating for me because they end up just yelling to get his attention.

Yeah, I have this a lot. Also the opposite problem; I think people are talking to me when they aren't.

I don't know if someone is talking to me unless they have mentioned me by name, I ask, or I'm the only person in the room with them and it's a logical deduction from there, differentiating whether they are talking to themselves or me. It's also confusing, if someone mentions me by name and there are other people nearby they could be talking ABOUT me instead of TO me. But if someone else is there to respond for me I don't see too big of a difference.

Yes. When something has grabbed my complete attention, I usually don't hear much of anything, including someone talking to me, and have been told almost forever that I was "hard of hearing," which I've never been.

I've done that numerous times. You shouldn't feel bad about it. I might hear people talking in the back of my mind somewhere, but I never pay attention to what they're saying & usually tune it all out. But sometimes one of the people I tune out will be someone who is talking to me & I didn't know it.

That happens to me, from time to time. It can be very annoying.
