Sometimes when two people both know certain song lyrics or lines from a movie, they'll quote it at each other if it seems like it will fit and be funny. The humor and enjoyment is in the fact that they both know the line/lyrics, and are making a connection.
For instance every time my husband mentions the herb basil, I'll say, in an overly-excited Spanish accent, "You put Basil in the ratatouille??! !!" because it's a line from an episode of "Fawlty Towers". (The lead character's name is Basil, and in this episode, the Spanish waiter has a rat named Basil, and starts to panic when he thinks someone put his rat in the ratatouille.) If I said that to someone other than my husband, or someone who is very familiar with "Fawlty Towers", then it would just be weird, but not funny.
I don't think the idea was that soda would be appropriate. I think that friend just saw a good opportunity to quote a song that they both knew. Does that make sense?
