If you look for the Jeremy Nicholson in the article
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/artic ... nosis.html then you can find his publications
http://www1.imperial.ac.uk/medicine/peo ... lications/ in which there is one referring to autism
http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/pr901188e based on 39 autistic people and their 28 non-autistic siblings.
Prof Nicholson takes it as a given that there is gastrointestinal dysfunction in autistic people and that "associated gastrointestinal dysfunction and may be of value in monitoring the success of therapeutic interventions". There is no real evidence of gut disorder in autism.
He has suggested his urine tests will detect cancer, IBD, ADHD, Tourette's, etc, etc

That's interesting. Thanks for the links.
Not much of a sample population though. I'd need a far bigger study to feel happier with a diagnostic test, and as you said, there's no real evidence that there is a link between digestive problems and AS. That seems to be a bit of a throwback to the Wakefield claim that the MMR causes both bowel disease and autism.
