Some scientists are developing a test for autism based on the 'fact' that people with autism have different bacteria growing in their guts than normal folk...

Sounds dubious at best, but the Daily Mail has a habit of twisting information so if anyone knows any more about this or believes it has merit, feel free to post.

Yeah just because someone is autistic, doesent mean that the bacteria are autistic too 8)

I read somewhere that autistic people have a higher resistance to poison's (Appareantly), but thats probably quack science aswell.

Inject them with poison. If they die, they are NT. If they live, they are autistic.

If you look for the Jeremy Nicholson in the article http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/artic ... nosis.html then you can find his publications http://www1.imperial.ac.uk/medicine/peo ... lications/ in which there is one referring to autism http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/pr901188e based on 39 autistic people and their 28 non-autistic siblings.

Prof Nicholson takes it as a given that there is gastrointestinal dysfunction in autistic people and that "associated gastrointestinal dysfunction and may be of value in monitoring the success of therapeutic interventions". There is no real evidence of gut disorder in autism.

He has suggested his urine tests will detect cancer, IBD, ADHD, Tourette's, etc, etc http://www.scientificamerican.com/artic ... -instincts

That's interesting. Thanks for the links.

Not much of a sample population though. I'd need a far bigger study to feel happier with a diagnostic test, and as you said, there's no real evidence that there is a link between digestive problems and AS. That seems to be a bit of a throwback to the Wakefield claim that the MMR causes both bowel disease and autism.

What about people who have all the effects of AS, but no metabolic/visceral problems?

What about the fact that some of us are mildly affected, and others are way down the severe end of the spectrum? Would that register on such a test?

Looks to me like they did a lot of tests, though. I don't like it when they test their specimens fifty different ways and then report significant differences on three of the tests...
