My child is into computers and focuses on things he can play by himself. How do I get him to socialise?

Get him to play computer games that involve social interaction. There are also lots of online forums that are geared towards special interests and different ages. (You don't give his age etc so I can't be more specific. If he's young, play with him or join him online from another computer.)

This might not seem like 'being social' to you but it does involve real people and it does entail developing very real communication skills and it's a good first step.

Above all, don't force him to socialise if he doesn't want to. Aspie kids, even ones who are close to normal on the spectrum, need lots and lots of alone time. It's good for them, it helps them re-energise. Let him learn social skills gradually and if he's into computers, then online is a very good place to start (again, this might entail YOU learning a few skills too so that you can supervise).

I agree wholeheartedly with Wuffles.

Don't force him to socialise. My mum used to constantly nag me about my lack of socialising and I hated it, I'm very glad she's stopped now. I'm just a lot happier sitting in an empty room with a computer than I am in a room full of people. And who knows, maybe one day he'll come on here and socialise that way.

Same here. I HATED when my mom kept saying I should socialize. And I love my computer.
