Ive noticed people trying to argue that the gene for autism is the next step in evolution. Where are you getting the idea that a recessive gene for a progressive development disorder would have anything thing to do with adaption to the changes of our habitat?

I hope it's not the case. Everyone will be too busy sitting in their rooms playing WoW than getting laid and having kids.

If and when I notice people arguing that, I will ask them where they are getting this idea.

Temple Grandin has said it several times in her presentations.

Personally, I think it's a bunch of bunkum.

But in the decade or so I've been paying attention to "autistic community" online, I've heard it put forth plenty of times, along with the statement that if there weren't people with autism, mankind would still be living in caves. Which I also think is bunkum.

If that's the case, than 95% of the world's population would be posting on WrongPlanet, all day instead of getting out, and socializing.

Not everyone. :P

I don't understand why this idea has such legs that it keeps coming up over and over. It's a cute notion, take it or leave it, what difference does it make, really? Even if we were a progressive step in evolution, evolution is a process that takes millions of years, so we'll never know for sure anyway, 'cause we'll all be dead long before any determination can be made. Hell, our species will probably be extincted by an asteroid hit before then.

Then I probably haven't spent enough time on the online autistic community. But I agree, I think it's nonsense as well.

There's been a number of these thread reincarnations lately.
We've had:
self diagnosis
was Hitler autistic
is AS the next step in evolution
What's next?

If they reincarnate Hitler, will he self-diagnose himself as AS?
