I shouldn't be coming here all the time with questions about social stuff. However, at least I am trying.

Is this a dumb question?

Me(in gym clothes in the sauna): Do you think they will kick you out of the sauna if you are in gym clothes?

Gentleman: They might kick you out for stupidity

So, I make up a story about how another gym kicked me out for wearing gym clothes in the sauna to make myself look less stupid

Gentleman:

It's probably related to the dirt on shoes to keep the sauna clean.

Me: Take care

Gentleman: Have fun

This is AFTER he followed me around from the sauna to the steam room .....and back to the sauna. I think he was trying to piss me off. I have no idea why as I had never had contact with this person in my life

Him following you around was weird. I wouldn't want to be followed around. Asking a question about what is appropriate sauna attire isn't out of line. That guy just sounds creepy.

It sounds to me like he was just consciously observing some atypical behaviour and decided all was well after a bit of conversation.

What should you wear, a tuxedo?

I suppose a towel is the expected attire, but come on. What's wrong with gym clothes?.

Sometimes it is better to do and not ask.

People will call you stupid many times over questions that are fine.

Having never been to a sauna or a gym, I didn't think it was stupid.

In my experience, all I saw people wear in saunas are a swimsuit or a towel. Gym clothes are simply impractical, because they're dirty from coming in contact with weight machines, and when you sweat in the sauna, they get even dirtier. After all, the point of a sauna is to relax your muscles and sweat out the toxins. You want to be able to jump under a cool shower right afterwards, as opposed to letting the sweat dry on your skin and collect in your clothes. That's why wearing gym clothes in a sauna might seem weird. Still, the guy was a jerk for using the word "stupidity". I would have said: "I don't think that's a good idea".

In all honesty, I'm kind of a built guy. This guy was a skinny guy and he was with his son. I think he was trying to look tough in front of his son.

I decided to not humiliate him in front of his son. I know that would be hard on ANY dad

Not being there it's hard to get the tone of what was said, but it seems like he might have been trying to be a bit funny, though it's in poor taste if you ask me.
"They might kick you out for stupidity" could be said to a friend as a mocking but friendly jab, it's a bit brash with a stranger but some people are like that. The fact is, people don't wear gym clothes in the sauna because you're going to get as sweaty as you can. It's a bit like wearing your t-shirt in a swimming pool, it's just not the norm. It might have been just his attempt at a joke that fell flat.

He wasn't calling your question stupid, he was commenting on the act of wearing gym clothes into the sauna. I'm not sure why you chose to make up a story about another gym kicking you out, but then it seems like he took your question seriously and tried to come up with a reason it wouldn't be allowed.

P.S. Sweating doesn't release any significant amount of toxins, it's best to let the kidneys and liver do that job. If you dehydrate yourself enough, it's counterproductive toxin-wise.

the guy might have been trying have a laugh, maybe start a bit of banter. I have to stop myself from taking the piss out of people on the basis that they are complete strangers and may take it the wrong way

The only stupid question is the one not asked.
