I have always been nuts about food safety and hot/cold food handling, i took culinary arts in vocational school where i sat through many hours of safety and sanitation lectures.

Today i went into a local coffee shop that sells a famous ice cream in my area. i noticed immediately that there were meats sitting right out on the counter, and pre-made sandwiches on the front order counter that were room temperature (being a warm day that was about 85 farenheit) to the touch. i asked for a milkshake and the lady did not even use gloves or an ice cream scoop, she just used her hand to take ice cream out of the carton. i told her right there that i was not cool with that, thanks anyway. she responded by saying that she just washed her hands. she infact rinsed them under cold water. i said im sorry but im going somewhere else, she put the ice cream right back into the carton and said "fine whatever" the other customers gave me pissed off looks, but in my eyes, she broke some major health codes right there.

was i right to go elsewhere?

should i send an email or call the health department?

What? She scooped ice cream out of a carton with her hands? I don't blame you, that's weird.

You did the right thing, but my guess is that your average NT would have come up with an excuse rather than confronting her (something like looking at your watch and saying, "Oh no, I'm late for a meeting. Sorry but I have to go. Cancel my order.")

I would want to call the health department too, but if you do be ready to get the runaround, and a headache.

i actually considered faking an emergency phone call, but i dont like to BS anyone, i just wanted to let them know that was not ok, and get out of there

and also, we are pretty casual about food here in maine, most people would not say anything and just consider that their kitchen at home isnt exactly spotless.

You were right to say something.

You were right to leave.

You should email/call your health department. Between the room tempurature meat and the scoop-less icecream, somebody will eventually get food poisoning there. It's only a matter of time. You already saved yourself a week of puking and a round of antibiotics. Save somebody else and notify the health department.

I can't imagine how in this day and age it could not be a violation of a state health regulation for any food preparer to handle food without fresh gloves, or washing with hot water and an antibacterial soap.

I have to rewash and change gloves a minimum of four times to do just one tattoo - granted, my job involves avoiding the possible transmission of blood-borne pathogens - but it makes you hyper aware of situations where people aren't following proper health procedures, especially if you're expecting to eat what they're handling. Hepatitis is not something to be shrugged off. :eew:

I would have reacted the same way.

I would have done the same thing. That place sounds awful. Definitely report them.

Most cafes are lax on health and its disgusting and they need to have some respect for the job or get a different one. You should have done exactly that then called the health department.

Touching icecream with your hands is f*cking disgusting for a professional cafe selling it to people, regardless of "washing" them. Especially if shes been touching money, which is filthy, she should wash them in hot water and soap. and never touch it with you hands anyway, thats what tongs are for.

Yeah, who scoops ice cream with their bare hands? Completely illogical. I don't think I could even trust someone like that to give me back the right change.

Yeah it makes it sound like a chimp is running the place tbh.

I'm laughing IRL about someone even thinking of using ther hands to scoop icecream - let alone in a cafe!

That's disgusting, OCD or not. One of the guys in my house went to a KFC yesterday in Market Harborough (name and shame). He got cold chips that were practically frozen so he returned them to the counter and told them they were cold... they threw them BACK in the cooker even though he had done god knows what with the chips (luckily he isn't a 'god knows what' kind of person though!). Gross...
