Hi all,

Just letting you know that I wrote a book on my experiences with Asperger's, and published it on a site called Lulu.

It is called "Common Scents: Adventures with Autism and Chemical Sensitivity."and it is about two years I spent traveling around the country looking for a suitable place to live, and what it was like to do this while having Asperger's.

If anyone is interested and wants to know more please go to my website at http://kategoldfield.webs.com you can also buy either a paperback or a PDF there.

thanks! hope everyone is doing well

Kate

Bought a PDF! When you said "Cascades" I got all excited because I live near Seattle, but you meant the Oregon Cascades. Best Wishes, Scott.

I'd like to write a book on my own experience. How much does it cost, to publish a book?

Hi,

On Lulu.com it's free. They will publish it for you, and take a cut of the earnings, and then you get a cut, too. Lulu.com is the website. What do you want to write about?

Lulu is a self-publishing service, run like a business, without checking for quality. They make money, and you won't sell very many copies (around a hundred, IIRC).

There are publishing houses which will pay you an advance (a couple thousand), and then, after that advance is eaten up, will pay you a cut of the profits. They do check for quality. For a first book, you'd write it on spec (write the whole thing by yourself first) and then start submitting it (at least for fiction... I don't know much about nonfiction) to said publishing houses. Or it's possible to get a contract ahead of time. Apparently you really need an agent before you sign anything, but a good agent takes a percentage of your earnings, so if the deal falls through it doesn't cost you anything. (A bad agent charges up-front and then lets the deal fall through.)

It depends on whether it's of enough general interest for one of the latter sort to pick it up or not. If not, self-publish. Lulu's one such service, as is CreateSpace.

Thanks! I got my copy of the book in the mail today. It looks great and I am very relieved!

It's very hard to get accepted to a publishing house. Self publishing is a good option for those who don't want to go that route, which is very time consuming and full of dissapointment. If you promote your book well you can sell copies. Frankly I'd be more than satisfied with a 100. I've sold 15 so far and even that seems a lot to me -but I'm always looking for more ways to promote it. I've posted all over the internet, on aspie and mcs websites and email groups, and emaild everyone I know. I wrote an editorial for the paper too, but I don't know if they will publish the website address to buy the book with the editorial. I might ask a local bookstore if they'd be interested in carrying it.

Does anyone have any other ideas for promotion?

Thanks
Kate
