I did the same thing on another autism site where I don't believe I was treated very well.

Also at least one of the responders said that if they have seen his other posts they won't waste their time responding here, because he has made similar commengs, such as "aspies are liars" elsewhere. I didn't have time to read his other posts. But you can find them yourself by clicking his profile, and then clicking "find all posts by such and such" button.

May be I am in a small minority on this issue since I tend to take both sides. Yes this opinion might be damaging to aspies because this would lead innocent aspies to be stereotyped the moment they mentioned they have asperger. But, at the same time I don't think an opinion should be hushed just because someone DEEMS it to be harmful. I am sure everyone's opinion is considered harmful by some, so do you want to be hushed?

On the other hand, if you think his opinion is harmful, what you DO have to do is have a nice and long discussion with him about it. If you are right, you will be able to prove him wrong, and may be he will change his mind. But if you just attack him, then he might be saying nice things just to be nice, while his true opinion will remain the same. There will be no opportunity for discussion since now he sees that YOU are not open for one, and so there won't be apportunity to change his mind either.

So yeah, I am all for open discussion. But I guess I can see why you won't agree with me: since most people are not in such a favor of discussions as I am, usually trying one is just a waste of time (and in fact if you deal with trolls it only gives them the reinforcement that they want). But I guess I just want to say I wish the world was a better place and I wish people DID settle things like that through discussions, although wishes don't always come true.

I totally agree. I am more than willing to discuss something as long as both sides are kind. And reading over the thread, the responses weren't that bad.

I see no reason why anyone should be made to feel unwelcome or feel unable to express a view. Where else is there to speak with confidence and in private? If any opinion is wrong, for every reason it can be challenged. And whatever your opinion a degree of compassion and care is required. Too often 'community' is used meaninglessly or glibly if WP is a community we need to be tolerant.
