There's a difference between not telling someone where your friend's run off to get married (however bad a decision it might've been), and not understanding that a baby's a human being.
I think most of us understood that by age five or six at the very oldest, even those of us who were behind on theory-of-mind.
"Only 14", my butt. Fourteen-year-olds are practically adults. I remember being that age myself, and I wasn't anywhere near that ignorant. For that matter, I wasn't anywhere near that ignorant when I was ten, or even five.
