suffocates/?omcamp=EMC-CVNL

HOUSTON (AP) — A 14-year-old who gave birth at her friend’s Houston apartment, then helped discard the newborn’s body after he suffocated, was arrested after a child who witnessed the death told a school counselor, authorities said Tuesday.

Houston police said no adults were present — only another 14-year-old and two 11-year-olds — when the girl gave birth April 16, and the group learned about child birth from the Internet. The newborn was placed on a mattress and was “alive for some time,” but died after his head was covered with the amniotic sac, Senior Officer C.P. Abbey said.

“We were a little surprised ourselves that these kids gave birth in an apartment,” Abbey said. “Our question to them was, ‘How did you know how to do this?’ and they said they had looked it up on a computer.”

The newborn never cried, and no one called 911.

Instead, after the infant died, the group wrapped him in a plastic bag and called an adult neighbor, who told police he put the baby in a large trash bin at the apartment complex. The group also threw out the bed linens, clothing and the bed.

The garbage had been taken to a landfill by the time investigators learned about the death. They said the landfill was too big to search.

When I was working at McDonald's some lady from the University had a baby in our bathroom. Then dumped the baby in a trash can outside. Luckily our maintenance man found the baby before it died and, was able to call medics to the scene. I still remember to this day seeing the fear in the eyes of the lady who we later found out did this.

I think that people like this need help. Jail isn't the place to get that help. They would probably be better served in a mental institution.

She is a child, for goodness sakes. She did nothing that would make her a threat to society and should not be removed from it.

She could have put the baby up, for adoption. That's the way that I feel, and I have nothing left to add to this thread. This is where I stand.

She's too young to understand. I was thinking the other day about something that happened when I was in Grade 9 - nothing like this, it was only that a classmate eloped and her mother was sobbing on TV and begging her to come home - we thought it was wonderful. Even if we'd known where she was, we wouldn't have told her mother. We were only 14, we didn't understand.

Not really relevant to the topic but people who think typing like this is acceptable should be euthanised for the good of humanity *bangs head repeatedly against wall*

There's a difference between not telling someone where your friend's run off to get married (however bad a decision it might've been), and not understanding that a baby's a human being.

I think most of us understood that by age five or six at the very oldest, even those of us who were behind on theory-of-mind.

"Only 14", my butt. Fourteen-year-olds are practically adults. I remember being that age myself, and I wasn't anywhere near that ignorant. For that matter, I wasn't anywhere near that ignorant when I was ten, or even five.

If I'm reading this correctly, it was an accidental death following childbirth, about which nothing could be done. Attempting to dispose of the body was of course wrong, but hardly unexpected from a 14-year-old who just gave birth in secret. Punishment is not the solution here, what they need is many hours of counseling. The adult who helped them should have known better, and I do think they should receive punishment.

You can't possibly consider giving a 14-year-old a life sentence for attempting to cover up something that would have gotten them in a lot of trouble. I don't think you can give anyone a life sentence for that, it's a simple and non-malicious instinct of self-preservation.

i think her baby was a member of society. if she had stood by and watched an adult or an older child die and did nothing, the would have been charged.

since when is a crime not a crime when its commited against a newborn, or an unborn child?

Who said she "did nothing"? That implies she consciously made the decision to let the child die, which is not true. The child starts suffocating, the kids don't know what to do. None of the kids is (in a legal sense) at fault for what happened. If two 14-year-olds had panicked and not been able to save an adult, they wouldn't be charged with a crime. (Although getting rid of the body in that case would be much worse)

i honestly feel that they should of called 911 form when she started having the child and if i'm not mistakenly she could of left it there. are when he stop breathing don't get rid of the body called 911.

This was a scared 14 year old girl trying to hide the fact that she was pregnant, do you realize the stigma of being 14 years old and pregnant?

Why is this in General Autism, I don't see anyone in the article having autism.
