Triad Girl has Rare Genetic Disorder

This is one of those human-interest deals, but I thought you guys might like to see a video of a girl with autism's "opposite". She's nine years old.

Note the way they talk about her, and contrast the way people talk about autism, and how much air time they give her versus her mom--she gets almost equal time. Such a positive portrayal, and they actually let her talk. If they did that kind of thing with autism, we'd have a lot of problems solved...

Thank you for your post. I spent time googleing Williams Syndrome and Fragile X syndrome.

Is gene testing available to me as a 40 year old adult? To the best of my knowledge, my mother didn't have amniocentesis.

Wow, that is interesting. She is kind of like the opposite of how i was at that age... the way she was smiling really big at the camera and everything. I would have been like o__o (blank stare)

Yes, gene testing can be done at any age, if a problem is suspected.

There's actually a woman who lives in the same apartment building as I do, who has it. She likes to talk to everybody, and she never stops talking.

Yes, but that describes a lot of people. I wonder how many WS cases go undiagnosed? Except for the major heart problems....got to be careful with that.

Heh. No. More like, "curse the media for not portraying us as well as Williams syndrome people."

Really, this is the kind of thing that we ought to see with every disorder, not just the ones that make you sociable and overly trusting. If autistic people were given equal time when the news media covered stories about autism, and counted as self-evidently valuable members of their families and interesting people in their own right, then I wouldn't be complaining!

Did anybody else notice themselves drawn to look at her face? I almost never look at faces; but with her, it didn't feel uncomfortable. Maybe it's just that she's nine years old; I do have an easier time with children.

There is also a distinctive facial appearance. And although people with Williams Syndrome are usually very friendly and likeable, their pragmatic skills are often not very good. They may not know how to initiate a conversation *appropriately*, how to take turns in conversation, stay on topic, etc. Plus, the learning problems are usually pretty significant. It's not just a genetic disorder that makes you friendly.

If was interested in the heightened sense of music appreciation, and the higher rate of the individual having perfect pitch. I love music and wish I had synethesia.
