Questionnaire format change given as reason.
Autism cases in U.S. jump to 1 in 45: Who gets the diagnosis, in 8 simple charts - Washington Post

While I can't prove causation IMHO it looks like the attempt to cut down diagnosis by the people who wrote the DSM 5 have failed utterly. So is it massive over and misdiagnosis(be prepared to be bombarded on and offline with fakery accusations in the next few days) or is this the real rate as the Autism Speaks scientist says? I know one thing, the rate of vaccinations did not spike that dramatically in one year. So you will read conspiracy theories that big pharma engineered this.

I wonder if the additional people being diagnosed are the ones who in the past would have suffered silently, been blamed for their problems, struggled hopelessly in every aspect of their lives, with suicide being their only escape.

If these are the people being diagnosed and helped, then I'm all for it.

So there's the same percentage of developmental disabilities, just more people put autism on the new questionnaire?

I agree. I'd like to see them getting diagnosed and helped. I think it would bring most of these people peace of mind.

There are ways to manipulate these "findings" and if Autism Speaks was behind or offered funding for this study, you would have to wonder about self-serving manipulation. One of the ways you could introduce bias to an incidence study, if you wanted to, is to select for age group selectively, eg older children samples will have higher rates than younger children samples. Because the USA rates are significantly higher than other OECD countries, you have to wonder why, and scrutinise the different methodologies closely, rather than accepting the claims made in PR releases from outfits like Autism Speaks to an unquestioning and often scientifically gullible media.

The history of the CDC is far from lily white. Some huge fraud has been uncovered there in the past. Nor is it the independent government body that it is presented as. This adds some history and clarification:

Until there are credible comparison studies with very robust design, using both adult and child sampling, (even better studies would use multiple cohort sampling) there is no evidence that the prevalence rate is increasing.

If the people at CDC don't know the difference between diagnosis rates and prevalence rates, then it seems that they must have some hidden intention or are scientifically illiterate in this experimental area. It astonishes me.
