I absolutely dread going to the dentist. I know that I must get there, soon.

I didn't go to the dentist for years, until I went two years ago, and the dentist fixed all my teeth while I was unconscious (though he messed up one tooth and I had to go to a regular awake dentist for a root canal and crown, which to be honest wasn't that bad though it took about 5 visits). I think it has to do with sensitivities, having someone scrape at your teeth is torture (the cleaning is the worst part for me). And the needles for the novocaine are no picnic. Plus I feel self-conscious and awkward having someone fuss over me like that. I don't even like to go to the hair salon, and I haven't been to a hair salon in 25+ years.

You can go to a dentist that specializes in people who are afraid of the dentist, which is helpful.

Never bothered me. And my kids don't mind it either.
Matter of fact I just had a root canal 2 weeks ago, no big deal.

I guess I have just had decent Dentists over the years.

I don't go to the dentist anymore because it started really bothering me that they zap my head with radiation twice a year. I started thikning about brain cancer and thyroid cancer and wondering why they need to x-ray my teeth every six months and one time they said, "can we take some x-rays now?" and I said "no" and it was a bad scene. So I just quit going.

I'm not too thrilled about having my teeth soaked in a flouride goo, either (though that doesn't bother me as much as all that radiation), and choose not to use products with flouride or glycerin on my teeth at home so why should I pay someone to soak my teeth in a mild dose of rat poison at the dentist?

Dentistry is a necessary evil. I'm not fond of it, but there are times when I'm very grateful somebody knows how to do what they do. Sure beats the days when you had to take a bottle of whiskey and a pair of pliers and do it yourself. 8O

I was born with nine more teeth in my head than a human is supposed to have, so as an adolescent I had to have extensive orthodontic procedures to remove them before they started growing in, then years of braces to insure that the rest grew in straight. Going to the dentist was so common for me, I just got used to it. I did absolutely despise having that toxic fluoride goop forced into my mouth, though - fortunately, no dentist has done that to me in years.

I had to have multiple dental surgeries and my upper jaw broken, then years of braces. Also, none of my baby teeth fell out on time so I have had every tooth in my mouth pulled by the dentist as a child. The whole "someone has their hands in my mouth" part of the dentist is so routine for me. I just lightly trance out and I'm not even there.

But the insistance on radiation and fluoride every six months drove me away.

There is nothing like a bad toothache to wipe out all fear of dentists.

It is like all things the more often you go the less needs doing and the more you get used to it.

I just with I could detach my head and leave it there to collect afterward like a pair of shoes

I don't mind it really, it feels like a cleansing; especially if my teeth were in pain before hand :)

The anesthetic that numbs your jaw is quite cool too (Do I come off as a total junkie? XD) but it's such a unique sensation, like having a face made of polystyrene :D .

I have several cavaties and molars that are so rotten they are at the gum line. I have dental insurance but I do not like the idea of having people's fingers in my mouth. I also live in walking distance to 4 dentists. I am just being a baby about it.

Due to past experiences I don't look forward too much to paying a visit to the dentist. It ruins 2 days. The day of the appointment itself and the day before that. I get it over with and am happy when I leave knowing that my teeth are fine so that I don't need to return in a year.

Ah... weird that this was brought up, 'cause I finally have an appointment to get a tooth filled tomorrow, actually. I don't enjoy it, of course, but I'm really glad I can get it taken care of, because I really need to. I have no dental insurance and have gone a very long time without being able to get in at at any clinic, so I feel lucky to finally be seen.

I'm grateful I haven't required some of the procedures described here. Yeeesshh! The only major operation I had was when my wisdom teeth were removed at 22, which was actually quite enjoyable because I got to experience liquid valium and at the time I'd been experiencing non-stop lower back pain with a ruptured disc for about a year. The valium gave me a much needed break from pain, plus having my wisdom teeth removed some of the pressure off my messed up jaw. And the horrible toothache was gone.

I don't so much hate the dentist, it's the hygienists who clean my teeth that I usually have to say something to. I've been lucky lately because they keep giving me one with a really gentle touch, after I had complained about another. Some of them have an extremely rough manner, and get preachy while they are doing it. I brush 2 times a day, with no daily flossing because it irritates the hell out of my jaw from having to jam the floss between my tightly fitted teeth. I do it about once a week. Some just don't get it, but the one I have now takes all my issues into consideration and always makes sure I'm comfortable.

I went five years without visiting a dentist once. I'll never do that again. If I have regular cleanings every 6-8 months, the cleanings aren't too bad, and don't take forever.

I always hated the fluoride treatment too, but mine uses this foam now instead of the thick gel, which was disgusting. At least with the foam the texture isn't as bad. Still tastes awful.

And still full of rat poison.

For sure. But for myself, I need the strengthening boost, as I inherited my mom's soft and tartar prone teeth. I'd be more worried if there was fluoride in my water (from our drilled well).
