Do employees at places like restaurants, retail stores, and so on tend to react differently to you than to most other people? It seems, if I go to a restaurant and wait in line to order some food, the cashier is friendly and polite to everyone before me; but, when they get to me, they seem to want to get my order taken and me out of the way as quickly as possible. I know I don't know exactly what to do or say when I reach the cashier and my responses are somewhat gauche, but I try to be polite and courteous to the employee as best I know how.

It could possible be the look on your face. It's been commented to me many times, the most recent being friday morning that the look on my face didn't exactly match the situation or mood.

I also feel awkward going into restaraunts, but not becasue of the looks I get, but becasue of what I now know is one of the symptoms of aspergers is that the staff at them knows exactly what I'm going to order when I walk in. I would get embarrased walking in becasue usually someone would see me and they would be like "the usual???" and I'd simply say yes and try and sink my head as low as possible since I knew there wasn't something right about them knowing what I wanted everytime I walked in.

so I have had to deal with things on both sides of the counter. I have gotten in many conflicts with customers, because I "follow the rules" about things like quantity limits and little things like that. I have to everything the same all the time. I get anxious when I hold out my hand for the money and they put the change on the counter, and also when they decide to bag the items themselves and put a small things in a large bag. I have to use the proper size bag every time. People don't understand why I get upset about little things like that, but I do, but I try not to show it because I kind of know it's not normal. Also, when a customer accuses me of doing something like charging them the wrong price I feel like I have to prove that I'm not lying and I didn't do it and it's not my fault. I think I get the most upset when people think I'm lying because I almost never do and I'm a bad lier when I try to.

This happens to me way too often.

A lot of times, I will go to restaurants alone. Usually it is because I have nobody to go with and want to get out of the house. So I will go to a restaurant and do homework or the like.

The first thing I hate is that I always seem to get "just one?" or something similar when I go someplace sitdown.

A really bad experience happened recently. I went to a 50's themed diner for the first time. It was decorated with a whole lot of "kitsch" stuff, and I sat down and spent a lot of time looking around and taking everything in. Apparently I looked very odd, because when the waitress came over, she said with concern "are you ok? with this really frightened look on her face.

Um, yes?

If I am alone, I normally spend about 10 minutes looking at a menu. I just read everything.

At this restaurant, they had a handout going over the history of the restaurant. I was reading that when the waitress came back. She asked me if this was my first time. I said yes, and then she reached over, took out the menus and put them in front of me, and said "These are the actual menus, that is just a handout". I wanted to explain that I knew that, and was just reading the silly handout, but she was gone. I noticed when she got back behind the counter she started talking to other workers and gesturing towards me.

So anyways, I ordered, did my homework, and ate my food.

I paid with credit card. When I got the check back, under TIP I wrote "Treat your customers with respect."

That happens all the time, like in stores, it seems all the employees are looking at me. Once at mcdonalds, i had ordered my stuff and an eye tic decided to show up, the cashier said 'whats with your face dude?' i said it was none of his business, he kept pushing me, when i asked to talk to a manager, he kept pushing me for a reason.

Employees tend to get angry when I'm around.
I can understand why: I have got to "adapt" in order to understand what someone I don't know is saying. So I make the employees repeat.
Another problem: I speak very softly and they don't hear me. So they've got to make me repeat.

I always get the feeling when I walk into a store or something employees refuse me customer service cause 1. they think I'm too ugly, 2. they think I'm pscyho, or 3. they think I'll try and sexually harass them, particulalry the ladies. :P It's true though, I see guys walk in to retail clothing stores whatever and the staff their get all excited and go up and ask if they need any help, but most of they just ignore me, and I have to go search to get help ffs!! ! :x

Are you sure they'd think all these things of you? Certainly, the female employees wouldn't just assume you're likely to harass them.

Sometimes when I first walk in at a store, the employees will treat me like a normal customer--until I open my mouth or respond awkwardly to their offers of assistance. It's more when I do transactions with cashiers that I get the awkward responses immediately.

That sort of things happens to me all the time, and especially over teh phone when calling a business. They assume that I am very young or a child, because my voice is small and quiet. They will often be total (insert expletive)s to me and then if I go back with a friend, or ask someone to ask them the same thign for me, the person gets the treatment that I shoudl have gotten! It is irritating and makes me lose confidence, because I have a very hard time standing up for myself or confronting people.

People often treat me badly when I am in a store or similar situation. I had always thought it was because I am not "commanding" enough(I can't think of a better way to put it) But now, I know it is because of my lack of rudimentary social skills. I am always in awe of my father's ability to get what he wants from employees. He is a very...intimidating person if he wants to be.

I thought I was the only one in the world that experienced this. It is not unusual for me to get yelled at by someone at the counter for just asking a question. Never happens to anyone else I see. I have also experienced countless times where the cashier will be friendly and nice to all the customers except me.

At college, I got weird looks and glares from deans and professors. I remember getting yelled at from a professor for just asking about the time of the final.

Could be partially racism because I am Asian, but I also get yelled at and glared at and pointed at by other Asians.

This is very difficult to explain to my sister who thinks this is all in my head.

Constant rejection has also caused severe depression, social anxiety, and full blown avoidant personality disorder. Zero basic social skills and normal facial expressions and lack of eye contact make me a target . Bullies and as*holes pick up on that pretty quickly.
