Y'know, like, do you just say you're sorry and then stand there? Ask them what they need? Offer a hug? I mean, obviously the response needs to be individualized, but there has to be some generic-ish starting point that people use while they're feeling out the situation to figure out what to do to help a friend...
I always go with helping them or letting them talk about the person they lost. The starting point? "Is there anything I can help you with?" or "If you want to talk, I'm here. I will listen."
