(I'm still wrapping my brain around the concept that so many of my "quirks" might actually fall under the Asperger label, so please forgive me if I ask some dumb questions.)

I had to go grocery shopping today. I would rather scrub my bathroom with a toothbrush. I hate the stupid music (something always gets stuck in my head), the glaring lights give me a headache, the swarms of people make me want to run screaming from the store , and the vast enormity of tiny choices is impossible, not to mention having to deal with clerks etc. I actually overbuy frequently when I shop just because having to make a decision in that environment is near impossible and I just want to get it over with as soon possible.
Does anyone here have this problem and if so do you think it's an "aspie" thing, and what do you do about it?

TIA
:)
Lydia

Well, I don't shop for groceries, so I wouldn't know about that, though I doubt that anyone actually outright enjoys it... However, I definitely like shopping for clothes for myself at the mall and stuff like that.

I don't enjoy shopping either! I usually go the stores first thing on Sunday mornings. I don't like wall-to-wall people. I am big on lists! That way I can move through the store, all decisions having been made at home. I eat the same things most of the time, so I am not looking for the latest!

My daughter and I recently drove out of our area to my brothers house. We spent a couple of hours doing school shopping at the mall; HELP ME! My daughter knows I hate the whole thing, so she is pretty good about not window shopping. We start with pants, if she finds a pair she likes, I say, OK lets get four pairs. If she finds a shirt she likes, I say, OK lets get three... Just trying to move the process along!

I hate shopping, too. I felt pretty odd about that, because ALL WOMEN like SHOPPING. What was wrong with me??Now that there are others of us, I feel a little better.

I don't think it's an aspie thing. Like most guys, I can't stand shopping. When I do go to a clothing store, I don't even call it "shopping"; I call it "buying stuff". Same course of action, different names. To me, "shopping" implies trying everything on, comparing it with what you have, making sure it matches, etc., etc., etc. "Buying stuff" implies researching the stuff in advance, going in, picking an item in your size, paying, and getting out.

I don't find the grocery store all that exciting either. I like to go when it is less crowded and if I know what I want I can grab the groceries and be out the door. I even prefer to use the U'scans too that way you don't even really have to deal with the cashier. My husband on the other lands loves to cook so he likes to look down every aisle and check out all the new items.

Shopping stresses me out to the max. I HATE clothes shopping...the music in those shops is always way too loud and I find it impossible to concentrate on what I am supposed to be doing. I end up getting a headache. Shop assistants make me nervous. I feel like they are looking at me and have already made up their mind about the loser that I am.
I especially don't like the mall. If people are walking behind me,(even way behind) I can hear them talking or coughing like it is right in my ear, and that is annoying. When small children scream a pain shoots through my ears and it feels like my head is going to explode.
When I have to go shopping I try and go with my sister (NT) so I can cope. She helps me pick out clothes and stuff so I don't just grab the first thing just to get out of there. If she comes grocery shopping with me, I feel much better too.
There is one place I love to shop tho'...and that is ebay! It's great.

I think it's the sensory issues at the certain stores. My son used to go ballistic in the grocery store, but he's always loved it. He just had to find a way to deal with the noise, the lights and people.
I love grocery shopping and I enjoy going to the malls and stores. I try to avoid malls because of the Theta wave thing, the trance it puts you in and how you don't really need 99% of what the malls offer. Amazon.com is a miracle.

I don't hate shopping, but I hate standing around waiting to leave while my family browses.

Yeah, the sensory issues are definitley an aspie thing...it may not be shopping as much as the environment. I enjoy shopping in relatively calm stores, but places like Costco and Walmart freak me out a little.

I hate most shopping too - particularily the supermarkets and the malls - clothing shopping. The main thing I hate is the frustration - usually I have a list, and I can't find all that I want on the list. In the supermarket, I usually want perishables like cream, sour cream, orange juice, milk, etc and I have to check every label to make sure I get something that has the longest use by date and isn't perished. Whomever stacks the shelves isn't paid enough to pull the old stuff to the front and doesn't care if they keep pushing old stock to the back until it expires.

And in the isles they keep changing where stuff is, or taking it away altogether. I find it especially difficult to find cake ingredients. Grrr. And they've taken my favourite brand of coffee off the shelves all together. If you hate nestles (for ethical reasons) - you're pretty much screwed. And here they never put a unit price on anything so I have to get a calculator to find out which quantity of batteries or toilet rolls is the best value. It is rarely the largest pack.

I hate clothing shopping because I want stuff that is comfortable and fits, and gee it would be nice if it looked good, and hipster trousers and short midriff shirts are not any of these things and that's all the shops have at the moment.

But I love book shops, art supplies shops, specialist baking shops, and garden shops. It can be very hard to leave those shops.

I love shopping, except I don't like malls that much. For grocery shopping, I generally make a list of what I need so I don't spend too much.
