I just watched Temple Grandin on an in-flight movie, and I loved every minute. I really did. But her speech intonations seemed so extreme, even for aspie. Do most people with autism sound like that, or did it have more to do with the actress's interpretation? Or is that unique to Grandin?

It may not be too unique. Yes, even Aspies can & do have speech anomalies. For instance, I am &/or can be partially mute; I do use a NEO so I can write in lieu of speaking at times. But I do speak - - my voice is fine (I do not sound like Temple, btw) but my prosody can be off somewhat. I think for a short period of time, like a casual interaction, I am undetectable. But it's noticable. I'm told I actually sound foreign (but I am not). Perhaps that speech is like a 2nd language.

Some do, some don't. She didn't sound extreme to me though at all. I've heard far stranger intonations.

People think I sound foreign too, and my voice is fine, but sometimes I don't want to talk, or I might say "I don't know". So what accent do you have? Mine has at times ranged from Germanic to Weird.

How about Inuit? I have no idea what that would be like. Have you tried the Akutaq ice cream? What's it like?

If I have an accent (unsure?) then Alaskan. But, I am of European origin and do have a marked continental accent too. I have a very feminine sounding voice - wish I had a stronger voice though. In some ways, although Dr. Grandin does sound a bit awkward, she does have a commanding tone. When I fairly recently gave a verbal presentation, I had a communications professor listen in - he said it was well done! I am flattered, but it does sound.....different? Maybe stilted some, like a recording. I have been a TA for chemistry lab session; I guess my students do notice?

But, like others note, Autistic sounding speech isn't that remarkably odd. Of course, some accents are more 'off' sounding than Autistic speech. Oh, an Alaskan accent sounds very enunciated. Hate to admit this, but I might sound a bit like Sarah Palin. I am from the same hometown as Sarah. I'm not native Alaskan and any Eskimo languages are tough for any European/American to emulate.

I've heard Aspie speech that sounds awkward in ways that are hard to identify.

sidenote: Akutaq ice cream.......acquired taste? I don't personally partake, but it's salty/sweet (and kind-of yucky).

As I understand, without being too personal, you do have an English accent, yes?

You know, we all should post audio file samples of our speech - I've thought about doing this on the Wrong Planet, just for fun.

Do some persons with autism have speech difficulties and their speech and/or voice quality appears to many persons as being weird/slightly weird? Yes.

It's certainly not confined only to the general category labeled autism.

I doubt most auties sound like her. Grandin has a mid-Western accent mixed with a speech oddity that may or may not be connected to her autism.

If your autistic and British you would certainly not sound like Temple Grandin.

I haven't seen the movie, but I've heard Temple Grandin speak (on video, not in person) and never noticed odd intonation.

I've heard autistic British people with American accents, so it's not impossible. Strange things seem to happen to our accents, maybe it's that we often learn it from a different source, like the media instead of our peers. I myself don't really have any pecularities in speech. My accent is a northern English accent, with Scouse and Lancashire traits.

Her idol is Mick Avory, Bugzee. Not Temple Grandin. Mick Avory.

I lived in South Carolina until I was eight. I don't think I have a southern accent, but on occasion someone will look at me odd and ask where my voice comes from. Do I have aspie voice? I don't know.

When I read John Elder Robison's book "Look Me In the Eye" he writes about having a flat affect to his voice. When he finally got around to meeting Temple Grandin the comparison was obvious to those who knew him. When it came time to put his book on audiobook CD format he really wanted to read it himself so people would hear his asperger's voice.

I have a couple different voice oddities going around.

I have EXTREME difficulty in keeping a reasonable and steady volume.

People have noticed a variety of "Accents" I go through, most commonly a british or irish one. I myself sometimes think I sounds a lot like Grimoire Weiss from the game Nier. I have also gotten compared to Napoleon Dynamite for somre reason I have no damn clue about.
