We have a lot of useful sub-topics here--you know, for parents, for students, etc. I think one is conspicuously missing, though--a topic for scientific research and the neurology, physiology, and cognitive/emotional traits related to autism, not to mention the whole big "How do we categorize autism; or should we categorize it at all?" debate that's coming out with the new DSM edition.

A lot of us are fascinated with science; I'm one of them, and I see a lot of other people who are interested in biology/psychology/medicine/neurology here, too. I'd love a forum for specifically discussing the new research coming out, or the old theories, or what you think people should be researching. It would be great because, in general, good science benefits autistic people (though there are ways to turn it into harm--and that needs to be discussed too, with the ethics of research and the application of research in clinical practice.)

So what do you think? Good idea, or not?

That sounds very boring, but I guess if it appeals to some people then it's a good idea.

Yes!

But only as long as:
a) the discussion is kept strictly on-topic
b) "speculation" is kept to a minimum
c) information is backed up with reputable sources which are linked or quoted in-post for verification.

I voted yes, but I only want one if it won't crash the site or screw with what it already looks like.

I disagree with druidsbird; speculation should be acceptable, so long as it's clearly marked as such. That's how research starts, after all-- asking questions.

Good idea (my view).

There are two worlds within the world of medicine:

a) Neurology (the many, many epilepsies, Tourette, etc.)(brain scans, EEGs, and so on)

and

b) Psychiatry (ADHD, Asperger's, Autism, Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities, etc.)(an avoidance of objective tests such as brain scans, EEGs, and so on).

It's time today to begin to encourage Psychiatry to become a little more objective and scientific about everything like Neurology has been.

Some persons have described the difference between Neurology and Psychiatry as the difference between:

a) The moon is made of rocks (Neurology)

and

b) The moon is made of cheese (Psychiatry).

I didn't ask speculation to be banned, merely that it be kept to a minimum in a science-centered subforum. This forum already has a subforum for speculation--it's called Politics, Philosophy, and Religion.

And I don't have any problem with anybody "asking questions" either. I only ask that if this science subforum is created, that the discussion be more empirical and less rational. That's all. :)

good idea.

i also think we should have a forum (members only) for help / resources: groups, info about diagnosticians and therapists that are recommended. this is a major topic that is absent

i say members only because there would be a lot of talk about where people live and i think that should be kept private from random people browsing the forum.

I agree with katzefrau, but I'm worried about cluttering up the forum with a lot of subfora that no one ever looks at.

The scientifically-oriented topics in the general, and scientific contributions to many threads in the general forum, interest me. I think that they would die of neglect if they were partitioned into a geek ghetto.

I think this is a great idea and I voted yes.

While my knowledge of neurology, neuropsychology (and science in general) is limited at best, I am at least fairly interested in it all.

If nothing else...I always appreciate information which may yield further insight into my own neurological/cognitive issues.

Thus...I would comprehend what i'm able to comprehend and ask questions about anything I don't comprehend.

Yes....I think the topics should be at least somewhat comprehensible to those
who lack expertise in the various subjects mentioned.

I think it would be important to distinguish between scientific discussion of Autism and the controversy over finding a cure for Autism. There would have to be a very strict rule that forbids any and all political discussion in the forum otherwise it would end up full of hate threads.

Hello Callista,

This is a good idea.

The challenge would be in keeping the discussion 'scientific' or even just peaceful and free of saboteurs and bickering

Perhaps you could set up a blog (outside of WP) :?:
