I know several Aspies who have peculiar voices and/or accents that do not match those of people who live in the same place as they do (and not just because they are foreigners). Do any of you have voices or accents that are kind of... 'strange' compared to peoples' who live around you?

Everybody's initial reaction to me is "You sound posh"
My accent is definitely incongruous with my Essex surroundings . . .

I continually slip into regional English/Irish accents, having never lived outside of Lanarkshire (Central Scotland). I'm often asked whereabouts in England I'm originally from.

I intentionally resisted adopting the regional accent of the area where I grew up, because I didn't want to be thought of as a rube. Served me well when I went into Radio as a career, but I've never had much of a discernible 'accent' other than American generic.

I can, however, mimic all sorts of accents and voices at will. :P

I have a fairly general Southern English accent even though I've lived in Wales for over three quarters of my life. There are virtually no traces of Welsh in my accent, although I can do a good Welsh accent once I get into it.

Oh and a number of people have said my accent is a bit 'strange.' I think I have a couple of Northern features which I've probably picked up from my mum as I've never lived in the north of England.

I'm American. I had an accent that sounded either English or Swedish to people as a kid, but grew out of it mostly (although a speech therapist could detect it when I was 19).

I speak, with a Cockney accent, and I live in the Vancouver area.

This happened more when I was younger, but I would not only do the voices of people on TV/in the movies but get caught up in the reality of the movie. It happened the most with Captain Jack Sparrow from POTC after I went to see the movies in the theaters.

I still can do all kinds of voices, but normally they're done when people who know about them request them. I don't normally go around anymore talking like a cowboy or a Beatle.

Ha! It's funny to see this topic here today because my big sister visited me today and told me she always loved my accent. Yup, I have one, and have had it pointed out by people that live in the same area all my life. I don't really know what it sounds like to others. (I have gotten made fun of for how I say "hurry" and "alcohol" many times.) It's pretty much unique to me, I believe.

My brother's kids...they also have strange accents that everyone's commented on, especially the "different" middle daughter (who's been compared to me in many other ways). In their case, they sound similar to someone from Boston. We're on the same coast, but don't live anywhere near there.

I originally come from Newcastle, in England, so by rights I should have the 'Geordie ' accent . . . but I don't. People often ask me if I'm Polish, or Swedish, or Australian. I don't know if that's to do with how I look or how I sound, though.

I have often been told I have a distinctive voice, and I have a variety of accents and colloquialisms I like to use in different situations. But overall, I think I pretty much sound like a typical midwesterner here in the states.

My background is Scotland and outside Liverpool, I get mistaken for Northen Irish by some people including the Welsh, quit strange as Liverpool accent is more obvious, with sometimes Scottish thrown in, so I'v been told.
