Who knew?!
Ok so i was just googling for clinical a/s trials to join and came across thise set of physical diagnostic tests-

http://www.autismtrust.org.uk/index.php ... 7&Itemid=8

one mentions thryoid which ive never heard of before but do have hypothyroidism. So um- is this widespread- anyone else got it? I never heard of this until now.
Thought someone else might be interested to be able to go 'oh- ANOTHER thing caused by my stupid a/s!! !!'

ha ha :D

there is a load of stuff coming up if you google autism thyroid. Though not a proven link etc there seemsto be higher numbers of thyroid probsin autistic kids and also probs testin them as its a weird typeof thyroid prob which doesnt always show in standard tests etc.

No arguement. But i have it, its my autistic family, and there seems to be some kind of corrolation- i mean a significant number if people with autism seem to have it, like autism and stomach problems are common together but noone knows why.

I also thought it kinda interesting that theres a set of physical testsfor autism id never heard of including one to measure thyroid levels, as well as testing for stomach wellness. Just a heads up as it intetested me. ... Sorry it didnt interest you 0_o

I have AS and hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's, to be specific)... but thyroid problems are prevalent on one side of the family, and AS genes are from the other side. So I doubt a correlation could be made between the two, at least for me.

Hi Enid - I don't have any thyroid issues, but have acquaintances in the autism community who do. I wrote the following as a result: "Thyroid Dysfunction & Autism":

Best Wishes

Thanks juliette! Your link sems to be dead but i wonder if it was one i just read amyway as i read two autism blog entries on this!

I just thought it was interesting that there is this set of physical rests already for a/s while dx still is 100% cognative. This suggests blood tests as well for it- auto immune, which i have problems with. It was the thyroid whic origionally caught my eye.

Nice avatar btw. :D

I don't have thyroid issues that I am aware of. Oddly enough, my mother has the stomach/thyroid issues (not hypothyroid, like post-pregnancy thyroid years ago) but I'm the autistic one :?. Though I had a lot of extra medical problems as a baby that, along with the autism I can probably attribute to a traumatic birth.

The site you linked to contains a list of tests related to discredited, unscientific and exploitative tests that are (almost entirely) unrelated to any useful treatment for people with ASDs.

They seem to promote vaccine / mercury / toxicity / environmental "hypotheses" predicated on selling tests.

It's not a link to thyroid per se, but there is a well-documented, but little understood link between autism and autoimmune diseases, of which Hashimoto's hypothyroidism is one. I have Hashimoto's, psoriasis and type 1 diabetes.

That is interesting. I have ASD and also hypothyroidism. The latter is a recent diagnosis. Synthetic thyroxine keeps metabolism at normal levels, and prevents weight gain. My personal feeling is that hypothyroidism is more closely related to depression, especially after waking up, but improves as the day goes on.
