Okay, dunno if this is related to AS or not, but every so often I seem to 'zone out' and not concentrate on anything, and my thoughts are still there, but are more like a mushy combination of the rest of my thoughts, metaphorically speaking. Anyway, whenever I do this, I notice that my vision becomes blurry, and nothing, and I mean NOTHING is in focus, no matter how close or how far away they are. Anyone else get this?

I seem to get them during Maths. Soooo boring! I bet if I went 'deep' enough I wouldn't reconise verbal stimuli.

I have noticed it more when I was reading than other times. My vision will get fuzzy and I will need a great amount of effort to bring the words back into focus.(After I realize I am no longer paying attention to the words)I think this happens when something thought prevokin that I have read sends me off onto a tangent and I need to see the pictures inside my head. Its the only time(after I realize I am no longer reading), I ever have to "try" and focus my eyes unstead of it happening automatically based on external environment. The interesting part to me is the transition from "spaced out" to refocus, when I see patterns in the spaces and blocks of black squigleys that return to words.Sometimes regaining focus on the words or person feels like pulling yourself out of quicksand(in my imagination),it takes a lot of effort and part of me doesnt want to come back.

That sounds like a reasonable description of the "blank stare" I have talked about. You CAN focus on something, but why? You can give what ever attention you want to either, but why hav BOTH suffer? And what is the problem? It is kind of relaxing, etc...
It's hard to describe, but the why you spoke about it is pretty fair. Lack of focus on anything, unless directed, and the thoughts are still there, in fact a lot of things could intrude. Frankly, as a kid I was never given a chance to be there very long when it happened in the course of normal events. NOW, it seems like I have almost been programed to never let it go long.

BTW I don't know if it is only Autistic, or not. I KNOW autistics do it. Some parents worry about that. My mother thought getting me out of it was some sort of game. All the people I have seen do it were possible ASPIES or autistic. Anyway, I'm sure you aren't worried about it, but it IS harmless. HECK, it's even happened to me at traffic lights, or waiting at drive thrus. I generally respond faster than anyone else even THEN, so NOBODY loses even a second, and nobody even gets startled. Of course I wouldn't do it if I had a passenger! I don't want THEM to go nuts!

I go into the blank stare all the time and my vision does lose focus. I just go off into my head. It used to really freak my husband out, especially if I did it while "looking" at him, but he's gotten over that in time. I do lose all auditory recognition as well. I don't think it helps that much of my work is done in my head and then I come home and write all night, during which I am typing on autopilot and seeing the story in my head, complete with sound. It's probably just a very internalized thing. I do it when listening to music as well. I see music in my head. That will send me into the blank stare. I also do it if I'm startled though, but in that case it only happens for about a minute.

This happens all the time to me... I also stop hearing when that happens.
My hubby or who-ever is around has to try to get me to 'snap out of it'. He often thinks that I'm ignoring him when I really I'm not.

My Dad used to space out too... and when people would ask him why he was staring at them, he'd always say 'I'm not looking AT you, I'm looking THROUGH you'.

I kinda have a toned down version of krex's situation. It's almost like a dream sometimes, I could stay in that zone for ages if I wanted to.

One time I zoned out during an assembly. I always have my bag on my lap so I can slouch on it. One time, I zoned out for a while, and didn't notice I had pressed a button on my mobile so it made an endless 'buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu' noise. And I was staring at a girl called Zoe in front of me. She turned around because of the phone, and I was still zoned out, so she had to say "Tim, what is it?" and I snapped back and realised I was staring at her! Geez, I was embarassed!

I find that when I've zoned out, I subconsciously stare at something, but consciously I don't pick it up. So when I switch back to being entirely conscious of myself again, I find out what I've been staring at. It could be anything from a poster on the wall to the teacher's desk!

If pickpocketers could find out when we are zoned out, I'd be in trouble!

They CAN tell! Personally, if I were them, I wouldn't want to take a chance that you weren't SO preoccupied as to quickly react. For the record... I have not been that much out of it. My mother usually just waved her hand in front of me.

Sounds like inattention type ADHD. You find it hard to focus on things you do not like.

Math class should ideally be in the mourning when your well rested and not after lunch.

Its critical that you can pass the hardest algebra class in your high school if you plan on getting a college degree. You can learn later but it will be that much harder. So
if your be hide in math its important you get caught up now.

Whats odd for me is that when I tried the Adderall,I had a similiar reaction. My vission was blurred but I felt so focused on the internet that I couldnt focus on the room and didnt even want to get up to walk around my apartment.I want to be able to focus but not so focused that I cant refocus....is that the effect anyone else has gotten when they start ADD meds and does it get better with time?

I HATE THAT! Im just minding my own business and then some dumb person disturbes my day dreaming by saying "why you staring at me?". I just tell them i was day dreaming and then they leave me alone.
