Not any more, but I was very attached to my teddy. We'd have fantasy adventures at night based on the TV shows I'd seen.....I also had Golly and a dog called Dinky, but I was closer to Teddy. I remember my parents commenting that I was too old for soft toys and that Teddy was falling to bits, and I'd get really upset and they had to back off. Of course I used to cuddle him at night..we would always go to sleep wrapped in each other's arms. I stopped sleeping with him when I was abuut 12, but resolved never to part form him. I've still got him now, he's in the loft, but one of his legs is missing. My girlfriend taught small children and she used to borrow him as a prop for her lessons. She called him Theodore, which I didn't like because it wasn't his name, his name was Teddy. But she made him some new clothes so he probably got the best of the deal. And she knitted a cuddly elephant for me.
I was very loyal to my cuddly toys, even the rudimentary ones I'd made myself.. My mum threw some of them away but I rescued them from the bin and hid them in a small cave I'd hacked out of the garden rockery. They were in there right through the Xmas holidays and I felt guilty that they'd be cold, and I went out to keep them company every few hours. Mum didn't dare throw Teddy away though. I was always a pretty obedient child but she knew that she'd be pushing her luck if she messed with Teddy.
I've still got it in mind to restore him. When my son was small we decided we'd do that one day. I'm still looking for that missing leg though.
Real animals are a more socially acceptable thing for adults to sleep "with" (even if they're just snoozing on the bed somewhere). It's nice to hear them breathing and to feel them snuggling up to you for warmth. A friend of mine says her cat is currently being a real comfort in the morning when she wakes up - she's recently broken up with her partner - and I'm wondering if I can get my neighbour's cat to help me out in the same way. He'd probably go for it but it's a matter of making sure he can get out of the house without my having to compromise security.
