The pain behind the smile - for those of us on the spectrum I feel this you tube is a breath of fresh air, for those not on the spectrum a great insight. And this makes me wonder how long would most non spectrum individuals last playing the part of someone with aspergers, even without the co-morbid's, but many of us on the spectrum have to do this every day or retreat!

I liked the vid.

I seriously don't know how people do it. I can be myself most of the time because I have good friends, my cats LOVE me, I'm usually honest online and I don't go out in the big bad world an awful lot. I am on disability. When I go out, usually I'm not socially drained if that makes sense. And I always let some of my weirdness seep through, I'd hate myself if I didn't. I just try to act appropriatish. Even when I visited some people and actually was 90 % me and that was quite brave, I got this horrid feeling afterwards I had let myself down.

No way I could meet people on a daily basis and try to act like I was totally normal. Sometimes it is kind of needed to try to act normal, but sometimes people are too harsh on themselves and they can act a little more like themselves and that is OK too. I guess it depends. I have gotten surprises both ways.

Whoa...that girl looks like me.

But I've already been yelled and judged out long enough that I've quit trying to be as NT as possible.

Thanks for the video. It came at the perfect time. I was just having a discussion with a friend who insists I dont have AS. ( I have a diagnosis from two seperate doctors). I tried to tell him that its just years and years of pretending. My work puts me around people and it exaust me. Every facial expression, tone of voice, guesture I make requires a conscience thought. What other people "just do" I have to think about. I appear "almost" normal.

I just watched this again, so emotional, so powerful... its like someone really gets it and its out their, so often I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall, because she is so right, people who have not lived with such a difference have no clue what its really like.
