Anyone notice a big difference in tying a square knot (easier) vs tying a bowline knot (more difficult)?

by square knot do you mean reef knots? I do find those easer than bowlines. Infact I can tie a reef knot every time but have never managed a bowline.

Square knots are easier because they're essentially the same knot you would get if you looped two ropes, and interlocked the loops. You're just creating the same knot with a single rope. Of course, a lot of people have trouble with it, at least at first, and end up with a granny (same thing as a square, except that one side is reversed).

Bowline knots are a little more complicated, and serve a different purpose. If I recall correctly the purpose is to create a loop that won't tighten no matter which way the rope is pulled. (?) They're harder for me to remember too. I remember using sheep shanks and half hitches to tie our canoe to our car. I think I could remember how to do that if I ever got another canoe. I miss canoeing.

A bowline knot is a harder knot to tie for pretty much everybody. When my Aspie husband and I first started dating I remember it was *really* important to him that I learn how to tie a bowline knot super fast, and we sat on my couch for over an hour practicing until I was able to do it to his satisfaction. I must say, it came in really handy when I was out in my sailboat when a storm came up suddenly and I needed to do an emergency hook up to a float.

This website does a step by step little animated gif that shows the process.
