I'm expected to go on a trip to Edinburgh in the very near future to visit my father and I'm absolutely dreading it. The prospect of a week away from the creature comforts of home doesn't really appeal.

Reasons to Go:

1) Don't want to disappoint my father
2) Melissa Joan Hart said St Andrews is one of her favourite places
3) The Bay City Rollers are from Edinburgh

Reasons not to Go:

1) My stepmother smokes
2) Won't have access to my Commodore collection
3) Won't have access to my Sega collection
4) Won't have access to my DVD collection
5) Won't have access to my VHS collection
6) Won't have access to my cable TV and Sky Sports/ESPN
7) Won't have access to my DC Figurines and Tottenham Corinthians
8) Won't have access to my computer
9) Won't have access to the internet

If anyone can offer a few words that might inspire me to choose the more culturally worthwhile option, I would be very grateful.

Wow - you actually complain that your "stepmother smokes and sits on her arse all day watching TV" when these are your interests? Pot, kettle anyone?

Get up and put one foot in front of the other, maybe carrying some real books, a musical instrument, a camera or something else that involves doing or creating instead of passive consumption. Edinburgh is a beautiful city.

That's a fair point. It's the smoking that I have a problem with; the other bit was added in the heat of the moment and has been deleted.

Here's some: the library.
Head to the largest one in town and just wander around the place looking for something you'll like. Those old-world libraries must be overflowing with books on an interest of yours. (On a trip to DC once, I flat out refused to leave the LoC.)

Central Library in Edinburgh - I used to spend hours on end there. Also, plenty of Internet cafes in Edinburgh.

You should have gone this month, you could have seen the Edinburgh Fringe. It was fun.

Anyway, I suggest you find an internet cafe or, as someone said, a library. If you need access to your favourite forms of entertainment and you're looking to get out of the house more, maybe you should look into getting a lightweight laptop that you can take with you.

How long is this trip? Every summer I camp for a week, with now access to internet, phone, or anything. Basically just whatever books I bring with me.

Also, when I was less than 2 months old, my parents put me in the car and drove me for 5 hours to their hometown. Maybe a week later, we did the same thing in reverse. We repeated this 3-4 times a year for the next 15 years or so. Their home has fairly limited internet access, and not much else.

I am always online when in normal circumstances, but I never had much of an issue abandoning modern comforts for the duration of a week or two. So yes, it can be done.

That said, the smoking thing would really cause some problems.

Principal con: it is family and you are stuck with it.

Principal pro - it is family and you are stuck with it.

In my experience, Edinburgh is not at all a bad city, AND in my experience, after the first while the family will be just as glad to see you out the door as you will be to go find refuge.

Pick up some eats at Marks and Sparks - where in EDINBURGH I once found a pound just lying there! - walk across to the pasrk and feed the greatgrandchildren of the squirrel I fed there.

when are you going? the fringe is on till the 29th. there are a bazillion different shows and most of them are great. there is even a load of great free stuff and half price tickets at the half price hut.

you can hop on the train for 20 minutes and head out to places like longniddry and walk along the sandiest coastline in europe! north berwick is supposed to be great too.

arthurs seat is a great place to go and relax. you can usually find somewhere nice to chill out and read a book or something without many people walking past.

there is a fantastic canal to walk along

the pentlands are great to walk around

there is museums and galleries and probably even more free entrance exhibits due to the festival

the book festival and several other small events keep going for a few days after the fringe.

go out and get some punani if that is your thing!

I'd say it's worth it but i live here hahaha.
