I wear sunglasses all the time when I'm outdoors. Sometimes even while indoors, if window or light glares are bothersome because I haven't had enough sleep. I've been relying on sunglasses fulltime for about 6 years, now. Before that, I hated sunglasses, because all of them that I'd ever come across seemed counterproductive - probably the same problems that you currently have with them. But discovering the right sunglasses has been a boon to my happiness because they allow me to spend time outdoors in the bright sun and give me another degree of control. My sunglasses are an indispensible tool for me.
My key to sunglasses is that they must be polarized. Polarized lenses remove the glare and make everything I see more defined. They work without having to be very heavily tinted. You can get them with just about any degree of "darkness" that you desire (I usually go for light brown, only moderately tinted, so that I can wear them indoors if I need to). Polarization use to be considered a "premium feature" for sunglasses, driving up the price. However, now polarized sunglasses can be obtained "on the cheap" (I usually pay around $10 USD for them).
Of course, if you require corrective lenses, you'll need something extra. I'll let you figure that out, since I don't know much about clip-ons or contacts.
