Do you get depressed and does it have to do with A.S?

I use to get depressed sometimes; I have not in a while, mostly what triggers it is people when it does happen, keeping up with them and their circumstances. I have not had to concern myself with people that much in a few years.

Left to my own devices and just left alone I am perfectly fine. Upset of routine, create unpredictability and I become scattered minded.

I have increased anticipations, yet it is some uncertainty with going to the regional center for things to do.

The best way I have considered depression is a state of mind of lower energy, where one can talk him or herself into more depression.

Have you come up with strategies to help with depression? Having indoor plants to take care of, doing some outdoor gardening and even a cat can help.

IF you have A.S and get depressed what techniques have you discovered to better your mood?

i was never depressed before (well, i was in middle school but that was difefrent than what i'm talking about) but then i was started on an anti-depressent for stomach aches and when it came time to take me off, i started to get very depressed, so they just kept me on it.
if you're very depressed you should get help for it. i'm not anymore now that i have my medicine.

I have general medication sensativities.. Also I do not percieve myself as chronicly depressed.

The one time I was put on medication when younger I got into a fight and that was in high school. In high school tolerating that environment was to much, yet I was intolerant to medications, so it was not really me but the environments I was put into. Not my fualt so I should have not been drugged anyways to fit into something my mind was incompatible with.

I don't blame my depression directly on AS (even if I should). I just get lonely and frustrated and worry a lot.

I am prone to depression, more specifically, negative thinking. My friend tells me when I'm doing it cos it's hard to realise myself that I'm doing it. I've had one or two major periods of depression in my life. I have also suffered panic/anxiety attacks on and off since about the age of 14, although these rarely trouble me now I've found out about my AS (weird?). I tend to just get these fits of rage instead, where I'm really annoyed with everything. I think the anger is less frightening to deal with though because I can channel it into other things.

Well really, to consider A.S as a reason partially for depression, such as some I have seen with social frustration, would be to insult the aspie identity.

Peer pressure on that one, big time.. yeah..

I understand how some of this stuff works!

I get depressed seomtimes, but it's usually from lack of fresh air and sunshine, and usually around Jan./Feb. A seasonal kind of thing. I make myself get outside and do something other than just sit in the house and get more depressed.
Other than that, when I get depressed, which is not often, it's PTSD-related.

I wonder if PTSD can be generated from bully experiences...

I'm depressed because I'm sad, and I'm sad because I'm depressed. And am I thinking negatively or just realistically, or preparing myself for inevitable failure?

I've been depressed almost every day of my life since starting kindergarten, usually for asperger's related issues, such as lack of friendship, insecurity and anxiety, extreme sensory overstimulation....

I do not think this world in how it functions is properly suitable for my mind in most circumstances, so then to re-create an environment that is suitable I think is instinct.

Sensory overload as an incompatibility to environment I do not believe is a defect, it is just part of how it is one is.

Hey SC.

I used to have a different definition of depression and I hated the word and always thought that I don't have it. I used to think that only suicidal, way weird people get depressed. Now I see that I have been depressed most of my life. I am going to be tested for ADD next week and I have read a lot about the 6 categories of ADD. Esp Limbic ADD. Do a seach on google and read some about it. You may find it very interesting. Best wishes.

I've been diagnosed with ADD-Inatentive type after extensive neuro-psychological examinations. I think it's becuase I lack interests but the doctor did not know of my developmental history prior to high school!

High school was tourcher of stimuli and information, i'm a very focused person, one subject every 6 months or so not all those in one day, geez!

Hi sc, a little off topic but there is a great book 12 Effective ways to help your ADD/ADHD child - drug-free alternatives for ADD by Laura J. Stevens. It points out ways to improve by identifying food and chemical sensitivities and supplementing minerals, vitamins etc that ADD's lack by default such as Vit B, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc. Chapter 6 points out that an overgrowth of the intestinal yeast Candida albicans can desturb the digestive system and give off toxins that affect the immune and nervous system thus making the ADD and related symptoms worse.

I tried the yeast diet before I ever heard of Aspergers, APD and ADD and it worked wonders on my general health as well as my mood and the general depressed feeling I always had. I also started taking Omega 3 fish oils a few days ago and I feel more aware and less down in the dumps. I know all this fuss sounds like too much work but I am giving it a try and it is working for me.
