Sometimes I’ve wished I could wear something that hides me from the world. It’s from feeling not part of the world. Maybe it’s my idea of rejecting the world before it rejects me. To give me some control. My idea has been for a cube shaped head covering maybe with a display inside so my eyes are completely hidden. It could have some useful features like a drink holder. And I’d like to make the surface out of plasma display so I could change it to suit my mood. It could display red for anger or a favourite character like Sheldon. Or it could display Mel Gibson if you don’t want anyone to talk to you :)

Now I see that France has banned the burqa. Im not sure of the detail of how a banned face covering is defined. But wont this mean in France there can be no Batman? No Spider-Man? No Zoro? Would the Lone Ranger be allowed? What about the Stig using the helmet to hide his identify and not just for driving? (Ok don’t worry about the Stig everyone knows its Ben Collins and he’s been sacked.) Anyway France should ban all movies depicting heroes that cover their faces just to be consistent. Anyway if this ban spreads worldwide my dream of the ultimate Aspie headwear will be crushed.

Well technically Batman would be banned anyway...vigilantism is illegal, and in a lot of story arcs (especially anything involving pre-Robin), he uses his stealth to avoid the law as much as possible. Sometimes he becomes, or already is, deputized by Commissioner Gordon.

Batman had not been banned in France at all.

The problem with the burqa was that you are supposed to show you face in public places because of police control (though it rarely happens) and for safety in the stores (thieves, criminals, etc), that's all.

Batman is not real, though there was a man who enjoyed going out dressed like Batman or Superman to run after the train (but he never wore a mask) so there's no problem with that.

People are allowed to wear hats, burqa, anything that hide their face at home or in the streets I think. The burqa problem is a little bit complicated because it's also a religious sign like crosses or stars and you are not supposed to wear one in public places either, especially not at school or at work (though they tend to accept people with crosses which I find discriminating against muslims).

In fact most of French superheroes do not wear masks (unless they want to make fun of the masked ones)

You will tell me: "So they get arrested all the time?" I would say: Yes

And there is no "the Stig" because we all know there is no such thing as a good French driver

The problem with the burqa involves two things: first, the objective matter of security. France doesn't like the idea of people covering their faces constantly in public where they can't be identified. The problem is less for individual face coverings and more for the fact that there are a LOT of Muslims in France and girls wearing the burqa all look exactly alike under them.

The second involves France's disagreement with Islamic oppression of females. They've stated quite clearly that it conflicts with their belief in freedom of expression and their general democratic and moral values to permit women to walk around completely covering themselves. The issue is is that, while a lot of women do like wearing the burqa, a lot of times it's enforced by the husband on threat of death or harm if they don't wear it (or uncles, dads, brothers, etc). The occurrence of honor killings due to women not adhering to Islamic rules is pretty sickening to anybody in first world countries, and France has stated their discomfort with the idea. So they're motivated by both security and religious disagreement reasons. Paris does permit Muslims to pray in public (once a week?) en masse, but that's just prayer; that has nothing to do with their laws about women that restrict freedom. A lot of people in Paris though are moving to have the prayers banned because people can't move to or from work, get in or out of their houses, etc, when the Muslims are praying and they don't believe they should have to conform to a religious prayer ceremony by dealing with it.

i guess it must not get that cold in france... here in canada when it gets down to -40C/-40F, we all have our faces covered... i understand that france is making a political statement, and is also wanting to ensure criminals are identified. but such a stand is not always practical!

What? France doesn't allow people to cover their faces? Then how do you explain this, gentlemen?

I agree with Sarkozy, Batman is a menace and should be banned!!

No, but seriously, it's not even a religious issue. Many practicing Muslims don't wear them, it's often extremists. They should be banned worldwide!

Must be from the GIGN, an army elite group who hunt bad guys, like the police. So he does not count as a superhero

There is french superheroes!? I never heard about it, and my native language is french... French comic books generally don't have superheroes. (And are much more diversified.)

Usually the temperature does not go under -10°C (I think that's 14°F) and it's mostly in the north and east of the country, you can hide your face a little, most people do wear a big scarf even on their mouth and a knitted beanie but when you're inside a building you no longer need to cover your face that much (and that's what they mean by "public places"). You can wear them in the streets (I do not know for the burqa but you can cover your face outside)

There are many things which are not always practical, everywhere, but our winters are not so cold usually. We even had more than 5 winters without real snow before 2008.

And there are more serious issues than this one with our government.

I've seen many non extremist people wearing them, often old ladies. Apparently, many teenager wore them as well at school, I don't think that they were all extremists, the problem was also that they used their religion as an excuse to skip some classes like sports and that religious signs are forbidden in schools (you can wear a necklace but you have to hide it under your clothes though most people don't pay attention to it, but you cannot wear a shirt with "I believe in Jesus" written on it nor a burqa).

By the way...

French superhero ?!

We have Fantômette but she does wear a mask, and apparently "le Nyctalope" (I made a research on google for that one) but they come from novels more than from comic books.

Masked hero of French comics : http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-4032-BD ... blanc.html
